CRUNCH TIME
The race to get a berth into the 16 starting stalls for the December 2 Diamond Mile is reaching fever pitch. There are not many races left for potential runners to earn their Diamond Mile credits.
The Burger King-sponsored Superstakes Day, Saturday, November 11, therefore holds the key for those connections wanting to see their colours unfurl in the Diamond Mile.
On Superstakes Day, the winners of the three main races, including the Superstakes itself (10-furlongs); the Caribbean Sprint Championships ( six furlongs) and the Invitational Mile all guarantee automatic entry into the Diamond Mile, no matter where the particular horse is positioned at the time on the official list of earners.
A fourth automatic entry as per the conditions of the Diamond Mile is allowed to the winner of the Jamaica Derby during the year the Diamond Mile is run. For 2017, that honour is bestowed on Triple Crown-winning filly She’s A Maneater.
