St Aloysius Primary hosts fundraiser
St Aloysius Primary School in Kingston is hoping they will raise enough funds from today’s concert to repair the school’s infrastructure.
The 150-year-old institution, in association with ASHE, is slated to host the concert at the Ada Issa auditorium at St George’s College on North Street. All proceeds will go to the school.
“We want to reconstruct our partitions among other things needed for the school grounds. We have been trying a good while but the funds are not coming because we had other things that keep coming up, but the partition is really an essential thing right now for us. We want to decrease indiscipline. We also use the classrooms that have the partitions to host our national exams and internal exams. We need the grade two block and the grade six block as we usually have two centres,” Panceta Walker told the Jamaica Observer.
Walker, who is also the grade two coordinator, pointed out that the current arrangement is hazardous.
“As I speak, it is tied up with a piece of rope and any minute now it can fall, and that is not safe for the children. We want to remove it and have something structured that we can open freely,” said Walker.
She pointed out that they have been using chalk boards to separate classes, but this poses a challenge.
“The noise level is really high. It affects the class because when one teacher is teaching, say for instance, science, another doing an activity, say mathematics, it is really conflicting and confusing. You will find that a teacher might have to go outside. As we speak, we have a practice teacher from St Joseph’s College and one teacher being assessed today and the other has to go outside the class,” Walker explained.
Walker is urging all past students and well-wishers to come out and support the fundraising initiative.
