Dunn, Brown Burke, Golding sworn in as MPs
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) candidate in last Monday’s by-election, Dr Norman Dunn, and the People’s National Party’s (PNP) Dr Angela Brown Burke and Mark Golding were a short while ago sworn-in as Members of Parliament in the House of Representatives at Gordon House on Duke Street in Kingston.
The new MPs will now represent the constituencies of St Mary South Eastern, St Andrew South Western and St Andrew Southern respectively.
Dunn replaced former MP, the late Dr Winston Green who died suddenly; while Brown Burke replaces former Prime Minister and PNP president, Portia Simpson Miller, who retired earlier this year, and Golding is taking over from Dr Omar Davies, who also vacated his seat earlier this year.
This morning, the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (EOJ) released the results of the final count from the by-elections noting that Director of Elections, Orette Fisher has since advised the Governor-General and the Clerk to the Houses of Parliament as to the winning candidates.
In St Andrew Southern 6,203 votes went to Golding while 774 went to the JLP’s Dane Dennis.
There were 108 rejected ballots and a 30.11 per `cent voter turnout in that constituency.
In St Andrew South Western, Brown Burke amassed a total of 6,324 votes from the 6,659 that were cast, while Victor Hyde of the JLP got the remaining 223 votes.
Of the total amount of votes cast, 112 were rejected and there was a 25.94 per cent voter turnout.
In St Mary South Eastern, which saw a whopping 61.42 per cent voter turnout, the JLP’s Dr Dunn got 8,169 of the 15,509 votes that were cast, while the PNP’s Dr Shane Alexis walked away with 7,246 votes.
Only 94 ballots were rejected.
