Gun salute to the new year!
Dear Editor,
‘Gun salute Warning! Police going after gangsters in MoBay communities who ring in the new year with bullets’, was the captivating headline of the
Sunday Observer of November 12, 2017. My, my!
It seems to have taken the police nearly the entire year to fix their minds on these gunmen who easily have their way in a gun spree festival every New Year’s Eve — their way of ringing in the new year. But, ‘it’s never too late for a shower of rain.’ That’s the old adage that brings us some comfort as law-abiding citizens of this sovereign nation.
What the citizens of every community across Jamaica already know long, long time now, it took the lawmen too long to figure out and to plug this loophole in the ugly crime fabric of Jamaica.
Illegal guns have been ‘barking’ all around us for a lifetime — at times even in close proximity to many police stations. I guess the ears of these lawmen are tired now to hear those sounds pierce the air. Thanks must go to those loyal and watchful citizens who are working with the police to reliably inform them of this lawlessness, not only in Montego Bay, but in other parts of Jamaica, such as Kingston & St Andrew and suburban communities as Portmore.
Too much for too long now! Let’s silence these brazen gunmen, and next the target must be wanton lawlessness.
So we all will wait with much anticipation, as decent, law-abiding citizens, to see how the police will tackle this age-long gun spree (gun salute) of ringing in the new year.
Let me hope I have not spoken too soon.
