Ja cop five medals at Suriname Badminton Open
Jamaica secured five medals, inclusive of one gold, two silver and two bronze, at 11th staging of the 2017 Suriname International Badminton Open Championship which was held at Ismay van Wilgen Sporthal, Paramaribo, Suriname, from November 15-18.
Jamaica’s highest ranked men’s doubles pair of Dennis Coke and Anthony McNee defeated fellow Jamaicans and Caribbean champions Gareth Henry and Samuel Ricketts for the gold medal in an epic rematch of the Carebaco International Open held in Trinidad this summer.
Jamaica’s top mixed doubles pair of Dennis Coke and Katherine Wynter fought well in the finals and secured silver against the top seeds from Cuba — Leodannis Martinez and Tahimara Oropeza — with the Jamaican pair of Anthony McNee and Alana Bailey securing bronze.
Jamaica’s top female Katherine Wynter earned a personal best by winning bronze in the Ladies Singles, with a semi-final three-set victory against the number one seed from Peru, Fernanda Saponara Rivva.
The team of males — Anthony McNee, Dennis Coke, Samuel Ricketts and Gareth Henry — and females — Katherine Wynter and Alan Bailey, who is still a junior player — returned to the island yesterday.
