KC’s Mackison on course for KFC’s Big Deal Golden Boot
Kingston College’s wait for another Manning Cup title may have been extended, but the North Street-based team and their star striker Rashawn Mackison are certainly aiming to end the season on a high.
Come tomorrow in the ISSA/FLOW Super Cup final against St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) at Sabina Park, Mackison will be seeking to arrest the KFC Big Deal Golden Boot Award, and by extension, lift his team to their first hold on the coveted title.
The tall striker has so far netted three times in the lucrative competition, which leaves him tied with Calabar High’s Collin Anderson atop the Super Cup scoring charts.
But with the lone title now at stake for the Ludlow Bernard-coached team, the talismanic striker is expected to come to the fore in a big way and edge ahead of Anderson.
KFC’s brand manager Andrei Roper said the Golden Boot Award is one way in which his firm as a sponsor of the Super Cup can assist in the development of Jamaica’s next generation of players.
Cornwall College’s Jourdaine Fletcher copped the prize last year for his seven goals in leading his team to the Super Cup final where they were beaten 1-0 by Wolmer’s Boys.
Fletcher, who went on to represent Premier League outfit Montego Bay United and the senior Reggae Boyz team was awarded a scholarship to the San Jacinto South Junior College in Texas for whom he now plays.
He recently scored his first goal for the team in a 5-1 win over Paris Junior College in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division One competition.
“Youth development is a very important part of our KFC mandate, and our sponsorship of events like the FLOW Super Cup helps us provide platforms for our student athletes to develop both on and off the field of play,” Roper stated.
“The KFC Big Deal Golden Boot Award is one such way that we are able to give back and highlight the outstanding achievements of our student athletes. It makes us proud when we see a past winner like Jourdaine doing so well, even making it into the Reggae Boyz squad, and we hope that this year’s winner will also move on to do great things on and off the field,” he added.
