Cornwall College advance to quarters of U-14 football
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Defending all-island ISSA schoolboy Under-14 champions Cornwall College qualified for the quarter-finals of the rural area competition on Monday after beating Anchovy High 4-2 in their rescheduled second-round Zone One game played at Cornwall College.
Cornwall College led 3-2 at the half-time break in the game that was originally set for last Friday but which was postponed as the city was still dealing with the devastating floods two days earlier.
On Monday, Cornwall College’s win took them to seven points from three games, beating Anchovy High and Cedric Titus 6-1 after drawing 1-1 against Petersfield High, and kept their unbeaten run over two seasons intact.
They now join Munro College from Zone Three, Glenmuir High from Zone Six, and Garvey Maceo High from Zone Eight as the qualifiers, with the other four zones to be decided later this week.
Meanwhile, all eight quarter-finalists in the Rural Area Under-16 have been decided. Herbert Morrison have won Zone One; Anchovy High, Zone Two, Munro College in Zone Three; St Elizabeth Technical High School in Zone Four, Knox College in Zone Five; Vere Technical in Zone Six; Glenmuir High in Zone Seven; and Happy Grove High in Zone Eight.
At Cornwall College on Monday, the home team jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals in an 11-minute span early in the first half, but were pegged back by a resilient Anchovy team that got two goals in two minutes near the end of the first half.
Giovannie Bruce gave Cornwall College the lead after just two minutes, Darnel Brissett made it 2-0 in the sixth minute, and Dana Buckley made it 3-0 in the 13th minute.
Anchovy, however, managed to slow them down after that and Omon Dawes pulled one back in the 25th minute before Romaine Reid cut the deficit to one in the 27th minute. Cornwall College dominated the second half, but an improved showing by the Anchovy goalkeeper Evaughn Smith held them at bay until a long range shot from substitute Lansord Cunningham in the 30th minute, broke the resistance.
