Harmony, Beaches Negril make winning start in Super League Zone One
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Promoted Harmony FC got off to a flying start in the Jamaica Football Federation Western Confederation/Charley’s JB Rum Super League, edging last season’s beaten finalists Montego Bay Boys Club 1-0 at the UDC field as the competition got under way on Saturday.
The Trelawny team was the only one of the four newcomers to earn at least a point as the other three – Catherine Hall of St James, Roaring River of Westmoreland and Grand Palladium of Hanover – all lost their opening games.
Romaine Lewis struck in the 28th minute for Harmony FC as they held off Boys’ Club who wasted several scoring chances late in the game.
Harmony are joint leaders of Zone One with Beaches Negril, who also had a 1-0 win over Catherine Hall at Irwin High.
Orane Lewis’s second-minute goal was enough for Beaches Negril, who got off to a winning start for the first time in their four seasons in the competition, drawing all previous opening games.
St James teams, former champions Wadadah FC and Faulkland FC, both losing semi-finalists last season, had big wins to lead Zone Two. Wadadah FC blanked Grand Palladium 5-0 at the Colin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea, while Faukland FC recovered from giving up an own goal in the first two minutes to beat Roaring River 6-2.
Oshane Hunter scored twice for Wadadah FC as they scored four times in a 19-minute span in the second half to blow away Grand Palladium who held them to one goal up to the 62nd minute.
Tyshan Hill gave Wadadah FC the lead in the seventh minute, but they had to wait until the 63rd minute for their second goal that came courtesy of Curtis Palmer.
Hunter then scored in the 74th and 77th minutes to make the score 4-0 before Oshane Forbes got the fifth in the 82nd minute.
An own goal from Faulkland FC’s Courtney Allen gave Roaring River an early lead, but goals from Jason Malcolm in the 24th minute, former national player Allan Ottey in the 30th minute gave the St James club a 2-1 lead, but Evan Vassell’s 45th-minute goal saw the teams locked at 2-2 at half-time.
It was all Faulkland FC in the second half, with Peter Campbell in the 67th and 87th minutes, Odane Snow in the 72nd minute, and Ronaldo McLeish with a 79th minute penalty taking them to an easy win.
