Blue Dixie comes through
Blue Dixie, the Gary Subratie-trained, American-bred bay filly, produced a good last two-furlong effort to win in the top-rated Overnight Allowance event at Caymanas Park on Wednesday last.
Blue Dixie ( Sky Mesa – Dixieland), ridden by Dane Nelson, after sitting behind the pace for most of the way, took over in the straight to defeat rivals by eight increasing lengths in the three-year-olds and upward event going a mile (1,600m).
Subratie was very elated with his charge’s performance seeing that Blue Dixie covered the distance in a 1:37.3.
“In her last outing she got into traffic problems and came closing fast and, in the end, to lose by only two lengths. This time we put on back the visor because she was lagging back in her races, which I don’t think is her normal running style, and it, I believe, made the difference today (Wednesday),” Subratie stated.
Nelson was able to get Blue Dixie out of the starting gates in good nick this time, but eventually took the bay filly off the early splits set by stable companion Awesome Destiny (Dane Dawkins) and Shining Light (Anthony Thomas). Shining Light eventually gained the upper hand and began to draw away from Awesome Destiny with Kanaloa (Melissa Ward) making a run against the inside rails approaching the half –mile (800m) mark.
Approaching the final bend, Nelson asked the question of Blue Dixie and she delivered in style to register her second win for the season, and the first in her last 10 starts.
Awesome Destiny completed the exacta for the stables, heading out Shining Light for second money. Splits were recorded at 24.0, 46.1 and a fast 1:10.4 for six furlongs (1,200m).
“The performance was really good, and I am happy for the win. I am very pleased, I mean 1:37.3 is a very good time anyway how you want to look at it; on a fast or not a fast track, the time is a really good,” Subratie said.
