NWC employees bring Christmas cheer to Blessed Assurance
MONTEGO BAY, St James-
Being cognisant of the fact that s tate allocations are not sufficient to provide for the needs of children in care facilities, the National Water Commission (NWC) continues to touch the hearts of the most vulnerable through its annual outreach programme.
Last week 12 NWC volunteers from the company’s western region journeyed to Blessed Assurance, a Mustard Seed Communities home nestled in the rural district of Windsor Lodge, St James, to bring Christmas cheer to over 30 wards.
The Blessed Assurance home provides care and shelter for pregnant teenagers and children with severe disabilities and HIV/Aids.
“When we learnt about the needs of the home, we immediately wanted to help. There were other suggestions from as far as St Elizabeth, but when we spoke to the superintendent it was not difficult for us to agree that Blessed Assurance should be the beneficiary this year,” said the NWC western region’s community relations manager, Teisha Pinnock.
The team donated much needed supplies including food, personal care items, toiletries, cash, and clothing.
“I was really impressed with the cash and supplies we received. I was touched because this is solely donations from staff. We sent out the notices in October, the boxes were dispatched to each office across the division, and team members did not disappoint,” Pinnock told the Jamaica Observer West.
After the official handover of the items, the team hosted a devotion, and it was then that the lively spirit and character of some of the wards became evident. They smiled, waved and clapped as the nurses and NWC team sang some of their favourite choruses.
Jasmin Manderson, supervisor at the home, thanked the NWC for visiting, noting that the supplies will go a far way in caring for the wards and alleviating some of the pressing needs of the home.
Over the past four years, the initiative has grown to become more than just a donation of supplies. Employees now look forward to sharing bright smiles, big hugs, laughter, and to lend emotional support to the needy.
On the journey back from the Blessed Assurance home, employees reflected on the time spent with the wards and many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to extend love and care.
