Twenty-one-year-old lensman Jordan Morris is a past student of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, where he pursued an associate degree in Fine Arts, majoring in the field of photography. “My interest in photography started at Meadowbrook High School. There weren’t a lot of things that I was willing to explore, neither were there any extra-curricular activities that I was truly passionate about,” he tells SO, and is thankful to the establishment for allowing him to showcase his talent. “I found myself being drawn to the visual art form. This new-found interest was fuelled by the material that I digested daily from the blogging site known as Tumblr. I was heavily influenced by these unfamiliar yet interesting collections of photographs that introduced my young mind to a whole different world that I never knew existed. During my countless hours of scrolling, I always aspired to recreate what I saw one day. By the time I purchased my first camera I felt unstoppable; I finally got the chance to replicate all the imagery that influenced me.

Morris opines that it is his use of imagery that sets him apart. “ I place a lot of emphasis on poses, props, lighting and expressions. I try to incorporate all these elements to create a visually appealing story. I’m not afraid to tap into my mind and bring my ideas to life, no matter how crazy they may seem at first. My photographs give you the chance to feel what it’s like to be in my mind; whether I’m depressed, happy or conflicted. My art empowers me but it is also a reflection of me. It’s honest. The camera acts as my microphone; this instrument became my voice. The camera has driven my creativity and allowed me to unlock my potential.

“I ultimately would like to venture into more creative directing. I’ve always seen myself being on large sets working with creative individuals to achieve a vision. In addition, I would also want to venture into videography and film directing. I feel like there are a lot of stories that I want to tell and motion pictures are the best way for me to achieve this.

“Photography is my passion; it is a way for me to communicate my thoughts, my ideas and a way to introduce my audience to my life in ways that words never could. I have been blessed with this talent and it is now time for me to showcase my gift.”
