KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, has announced the appointment of Harold Malcolm, JP as High Commissioner-Designate to Nigeria.

The ministry said Malcolm is set to assume duty in February.

“Mr Malcolm has demonstrated strong commitment to his country’s development and a keen understanding of international affairs. We are confident that he will serve his country well and further bolster the cooperation between Jamaica and Nigeria to the best of his abilities,” commented Johnson on Malcolm’s appointment.

The ministry, in a release today, outlined that Malcolm is a trained lawyer having graduated with First Class Honours from the Norman Manley Law School in 2008. As a Chevening Scholar, he attended the London School of Economics and Political Science from 2009-2010, specialising in Human Rights Law.

“The High Commissioner designate has worked mostly in education, lecturing in both law and English Literature, for which he has his first degree,” the ministry said.

“Prior to being appointed programme Director for the Law Faculty in 2015 at the University of Technology (UTech), Malcolm lectured in the areas of Human Rights Law, Public International Law and Administrative Law at the same institution. He has also taught a mixture of law and literature courses at Northern Caribbean University and the University of the West Indies (UWI).

In addition to serving at the Ministry of Education, Malcolm has also served as Director of the Jamaica Library Service and Jamaicans for Justice as well as Chairman of the Ensom City Primary School, among other voluntary responsibilities.”

Jamaica and Nigeria have maintained friendly diplomatic relations since April 29, 1970.
