Race for play-off places continues
RUNAWAY leaders Portmore United hold an unassailable position in the preliminary phase of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL), while Boys’ Town FC and Sandals South Coast FC are confirmed as relegated teams.
However, there remains a keen race amongst the nine other RSPL teams — all with a shot at the play-offs — with only three preliminary match days left.
At Drewsland Stadium in St Andrew today, hosts Waterhouse FC tackle fellow former champions Montego Bay United in a clash between resurgent sides.
Both had ordinary starts to the campaign, but positive results in recent games have kept them in the mix for top-six play-off spots.
Waterhouse, on a three-game win streak, are in fifth place with 44 points from 30 games.
Montego Bay United, who are three points behind Waterhouse in seventh place, ended 1-1 with reigning champions Arnett Gardens FC in their last outing, but that result was preceded by three straight wins for the St James-based club.
In another play-off battle between former premier league winners, Reno FC welcome Harbour View FC to Frome Sports Complex in Westmoreland. Reno are 10th with 39 points, while Harbour View are sixth with 42 points.
At Effortville Community Centre in Clarendon, visitors Tivoli Gardens FC take on home team Humble Lion FC in another keen contest. Tivoli are third with 46 points, while Humble Lion are eighth on 39 points.
An encounter between two Kingston and St Andrew Football Association teams also takes some of the spotlight today. Ninth-placed The University of the West Indies (UWI) FC (39 points) are the hosts when they challenge fourth-placed Cavalier SC (44 points) at Mona Bowl.
There will be little to play for but pride when demoted sides Boys’ Town and Sandals meet at Barbican Sports Complex. Boys’ Town are last with 18 points, while Sandals are one point ahead in 11th place.
All games this afternoon are slated for 3 o’clock starts.
In tomorrow’s flagship RSPL Monday Night Football fixture set to begin at 8:35, last season’s beaten finalists Portmore United travel to Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex to face title holders Arnett Gardens. Portmore United are cruising on 62 points, way ahead of the hosts, who are second in the league table with 48 points.
