Unicomer restores food garden at SOS Children’s Village
MORE than 40 volunteers from Unicomer Jamaica Limited on Saturday assisted in restoring the food garden at the SOS Children’s Village, Stony Hill, and later feted the young wards at the facility.
The venture, held during the Unicomer Group’s annual Volunteer Week, saw the team planting seedlings of cabbage, corn, cucumber, callaloo, tomato, okra and sweet peppers for the home. In addition, the home was presented with bedding for its dormitories.
“Unicomer Group sees social responsibility as a priority and has consistently developed programmes and initiatives that contribute to improving the quality of life for persons who live in communities served by Unicomer Jamaica,” the group said in a press release.
Said Commercial Director Janet Sylvester: “Our Unicomer volunteers eagerly jumped at the opportunity to restore the food garden at the SOS Children’s Village after it was damaged by severe weather conditions last year. As an organisation, we believe in providing solutions that are sustainable for the communities within which we operate, and our efforts here today reflect our support of subsistence farming as a means of self-management, growth and development.”
“We are thankful for our volunteers who, without hesitation, took up the call to lend assistance to the children and staff at the children’s village. Today’s efforts truly demonstrate the true meaning of volunteerism, and together we remain committed to building a better world through our support of various activities and programmes that contribute to community development, education, health and sports,” she added.
Unicomer’s Volunteer Week is executed in the 24 countries in which the group operates, involving more than 1,500 volunteers who work on the construction of houses, revitalisation of schools and public spaces, improving the lives of thousands of people, and creating social value for the communities within which it operates.
