TAKE FIVE!
As expected, Edwin Allen High secured a fifth-straight Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/GraceKennedy Girls’ Athletics Championships title sixth in seven years — when they wrapped things up in workmanlike fashion at the National Stadium last evening.
Edwin Allen were always expected to run away with the title, but both Holmwood Technical and Hydel High, who rotated between second and third place all day, chipped away at the lead and closed to within 20 points late in the day.
However, the Frankfield, Clarendon-situated Edwin Allen were not to be caught and slipped away after amassing 324 points, 35 points ahead of Holmwood Technical on 289 points, with Hydel four points behind in third on 285. St Jago (196 points) and Vere Technical (105 points) completed the top five.
“This is my most challenging championships of the six titles, but we fought; we came to defend our title and we were able to withstand the challenges from Hydel and Holmwood and retain our title,” Edwin Allen’s Head Coach Michael Dyke said in a TVJ interview.
Four records fell on the final day highlighted by Kevona Davis’s 200m win. Edwin Allen’s Class Three 4x100m relay team and the shot put Class One and 100m hurdles Class Two provided the others.
Davis kept adding to her already impressive record at the meet with a stunning 22.72 seconds (0.8m.s) to win the 200m, the second time she was breaking the meet record this week to add to the stupendous 11.16 seconds she ran in the 100m final on Friday night to complete the Class Two sprint double.
Davis obliterated the field from the start and was well ahead coming off the curve and just motored away to the finish line. She broke the 22.92-seconds mark she set two days before to lower her own national youth record and is the second-fastest Jamaican junior ever, behind Simone Facey’s 22.71 seconds.
Manchester High’s Kavia Francis was second, well back in 23.58 seconds, and St Catherine High’s Julien Alfred third in 23.74 seconds.
Alana Reid of Hydel High also won the Class Four sprint double after taking the 200m gold in 24.98 seconds, followed by Mickayla Gardner of Wolmer’s in 25.14 seconds and St Jago’s Asanneya Tomlin in 25.31 seconds.
Hydel’s Gabrielle Matthews won the Class Three gold medal, running from lane eight, in 23.60 seconds (-0.9m/s), catching Edwin Allen’s Tina Clayton (23.71secs) on the line, with Shenese Walker finishing third in 24.19 seconds.
Petersfield High’s Ockera Myrie made up for her third place in the 100m final by holding off the field to win the Class One gold medal in 23.31 seconds (1.3m/s).
Michae Harriott, second in the 100m, won her second silver medal after running 23.37 seconds with 100m champion Kasheika Cameron taking the bronze in 23.39 seconds.
Hydel High’s Monifa Green closed her Champs career on a high as she retained her 3,000m title, sprinting away from the pack over the last 200m to win in 10 minutes 33.01 seconds, followed by Holmwood Technical’s Samantha Pryce, who took the silver in 10:33.62 minutes, with Vere Technical’s Britney Dixon in third with 10:40.02 minutes.
Fiona Richards made up for losing her Class One discus title by smashing the record in the shot put Class One, winning with 14.93m and beating the old record 14.46m set two years ago by Janell Fullerton of St Jago.
Wolmer’s Aiko Jones was second with 14.07m and St Jago’s Gabrielle Bailey, the discus throw champion, was third with 13.94m.
Ray-donna Lee of Hydel smashed the Class Two 100m hurdles record as she became the first female in Champs history to run under 13.00 seconds over 10 hurdles, clocking 12.95 seconds (0.2m/s) to snatch the gold after placing fourth last year.
She broke the record of 13.04 seconds set by Britany Anderson of Vere Technical last year as the St Jago pair of Crystal Morrison (13.06 seconds) and Rosealee Cooper (13.43 seconds) took silver and bronze, respectively.

Edwin Allen’s Salieci Myles came off the final hurdle first, but fell yards from the line, got up and crossed the line eighth.
Brianna Watt of Edwin Allen took the Class Four 70m hurdles gold medal in 10.47 seconds, beating Hydel’s Stephanie Griffiths with 10.68 seconds and Orianna Barnett of Holmwood 10.79 seconds.
Holmwood Technical athletes won two of the three 400m titles, but it was Hydel High’s Shiann Salmon who created the upset by winning the Class One title and her second gold medal in a personal best 52.05 seconds, after setting a new record in the 400m hurdles Friday night.
Salmon and defending champion Stacey-Ann Williams of St Elizabeth Technical High School came into the home stretch together, but while the Hydel athlete maintained her momentum, Williams faded and was caught by another Hydel athlete, Charokee Young, for the silver.
Young clocked 52.82 seconds and Williams timed 53.30 seconds.
The top three in Class Two all produced personal best performances with Holmwood Technical’s Daniella Deer winning in 53.06 seconds ahead of St Andrew High’s Janielle Josephs in 53.24 seconds and Hydel High’s Garriel White in53.34 seconds.

Two 1,500m champions from Friday night returned yesterday to add the 800m gold. Petersfield High’s Shaquena Foote in Class Two and Edwin Allen High’s Rushana Dwyer in Class Three, but Holmwood’s Chrissani May lost her title in Class One.
