Royal rumblings
SECOND runner-up in Miss Universe 2017, Davina Bennett and local franchise holder Uzuri International appear to be at odds about the use of her images.
The 22-year-old beauty queen took to social media on Saturday to register her grouse.
“I am asking the @officialmissuniversejamaica and all the other pages affiliated with it to please stop using my images and stories of me, reposting my travels and brand affilitiations with Shea Moisture, as neither @uzuriinternational nor the Miss Universe Jamaica Organization paid, organised or otherwise contributed to this. It is misleading, unethical and unlawful. Do NOT use me as leverage to lure people in for auditions because soon the world will know!” she posted.
Miss Universe Jamaica franchise holders Mark McDermoth and Karl Williams, who are also the co-owners and designers of the fashion house Uzuri International, said they were aware of the post. However, they were unwilling to comment on the matter.
“We have no comment at this time. Our legal team will be making a statement this week,” they told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
Several efforts to contact Bennett were unsuccessful.
The Clarendon beauty won the local leg of the competition and went on to place third in the Miss Universe pageant held at The Axis at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, USA.
She was an instant Internet sensation thanks to her chocolate-coloured skin and trademark Afro.
She is the second Jamaican beauty to get into the top three of the international pageant. Jamaica’s highest placement at the Miss Universe pageant came in 2010 when Yendi Phillipps finished in second place.
