Harmonizers doused with soca, comedy
‘ Put your flag in the air’ was the hype- man’s call to Harmonizers on Sunday, day two of the six-day Love and Harmony Cruise. One of the highlights aboard Celebrity Summit’s, International Flag and Soca Concert was held on the liner’s pool deck.
The occasion saw passengers, the majority of whom are from the Caribbean Diaspora in the United States, representing their respective islands.
Jamaica had overwhelming support, with seemingly as many as 90 per cent of passengers bearing the black, green and gold. Fans from The Bahamas, Bermuda, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Turks and Caicos, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, St Vincent, St Lucia, Grenada, the US Virgin Islands, The Cayman Islands and Aruba also maintained presence among the sea of flag-wavers.
Soca was the genre for the party vibe, with carnival season either just ended or in full swing in varying parts of the Caribbean.
The entertainment quotient was raised significantly when singers Kevin Lyttle and Rupee took the stage.
Lyttle was first up and presented a reasonable set which featured Every Little Thing and Turn Me On, both major hits for the Vincentian over a decade ago. He also shared some of his latest songs, which went over well.
Rupee lifted spirits with his energetic and infectious performance. He rallied the audience into a kaleidoscope of socaphiles who were seen’getting on bad’ with their flags as they showed love of country.
Wrapping his set with the mega hit Tempted to Touch was just what the doctor ordered, and the audience loved every minute of it.
Hours before International Flag and Soca Concert the antics of comedy duo Ity and Fancy Cat and Internet sensation Majah Hype had Harmonizers doubling over with laughter.
On Monday the Love and Harmony Cruise docked in Montego Bay. The line-up of performers included Beenie Man, Sanchez, Chaka Demus and Pliers, and Marcia Griffiths.
The cruise has since moved on to Grand Cayman and is scheduled to culminate in Fort Lauderdale tomorrow.
