Davis out
Jamaican prodigy Kevona Davis of Edwin Allen High School has been withdrawn from the Carifta Games this weekend because of a sore hamstring.
Her coach Michael Dyke confirmed to the Jamaica Observer that Davis has been advised to rest.
“She won’t be going. It’s basically precautionary measures. She has a slight sore hamstring and her physio (physiotherapist) has advised us to give her a little rest and not to send her,” said Dyke, who led Edwin Allen to their fifth consecutive ISSA/GraceKennedy Girls’ Athletics Championships last weekend.
The 16-year-old Davis broke the Class Two 100 and 200m records with spectacular times of 11.16 and 22.72 seconds, respectively, and was expected to dominate the Under-20 section at the Carifta Games in the Bahamas.
Davis, who also got injured last year at the World Youth Championships, is said to be “good” and “aware”.
According to Dyke, Davis’s two Jamaica Youth records were the best performances at Champs. “Without a doubt I would say that. They are exceptional times.”
The powerful Jamaican Carifta Games team will leave the island on Thursday for the three-day championship and is expected to dominate the medals table once again.
Last year, Davis won the Under-18 100m in 11.62 (-1.6 mps) in April, then in June she lowered her seasonal and personal best to 11.24 seconds. In July she went to the World Youth Championships in Kenya as the howling favourite, but finished third in 11.62 seconds following a slight injury.
This year, Davis, who will turn 17 in December, has been in immaculate form lowering her 100m and 200m bests to 11.16 and 22.72 seconds, respectively, and was expected to dismantle the field in the Under-20 division.
Davis is the second-fastest junior in the world with 11.16 (0.9 mps) bettered only by her 15-year-old US-based teammate Briana Williams, who sped to 11.13 (1.7 mps) in Florida on March 22.
Williams, who won bronze at the 2017 Carifta Games, will again be participating in the 100m in the Under-18 section.
