RACE 1 – MAIDEN CONDITION (4YOS&UP/F&M) 1200 METRES/6 FURLONGS

Rohan’s Cattleya set a pace that would not have allowed her to have too much left and was caught 200 metres out. Thegreatexagerator pursued in company with First Selection and was the first to get by the leader. Miss Judy, ridden all the way, came wide and closed well enough to get within a half a length of the winner, while Lady Budget ran one-paced throughout for third.

RACE 2 $250-210,000 CLAIMING (3YOS&UP) 1820 METRES/9 FURS+25YARDS

Ballon D’or, claimed for a return to where his career began, went to the front immediately and increased his lead throughout to score by 22 lengths. Raging Prospect was clearly feeling his nine years and ran as though something was radically wrong.

RACE 3 $180,000 CLAIMING (3YOS&UPWARDS) 1000 METRES/5 FURLS.STR 

Big Mistake, up against vastly inferior rivals, was naturally sent off the long odds-on favourite and proceeded to dominate without coming off the bridle for any length of time. Laguna Point kept up a futile effort to chase the winner over 900 metres and got tired, thereby allowing Sundance to go by for second well inside the last 200 metres.

RACE 4 $550-500,000 CLAIMING (3YOS&UPWARDS) 1000 METRES/5 FURLS.STR

Consistent A. P. I. was grateful for the opportunity to be up against less demanding opposition and disputed the lead on the stand side with Little Big Horn until he was mastered inside the last 200 metres. Smokey Topaz, whose best effort was 11 lengths third to Siempre Bueno last September, ran on well to be just two lengths third to the two ahead at the line.

RACE 5 RESTRICTED ALLOWANCE III (4YOS&UP/NW3/OT) 1600 METRES/8 FURLONGS

Sotomayor, based on his last performance, when failing by a short head to Uncle Vinnie, left no question that at the weights he would have been difficult to defeat. On this occasion the rider tolerated none of his past tendency to get behind and idle, and therefore drove him to stay in the early pace. He turned for home with the consistent Simply Outrageous but Sotomayor stayed on much the stronger to be nearly three lengths clear at the winning post.

RACE 6 MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT DIVISION 1 (3YOFILLIES) 1200 METRES/6 FURLONGS

Miss Elaine broke well but went too sharply to the left at the end of 150 metres to hinder favourite She’s Symbolic severely and never looked likely to be caught, with the rider taking a couple of glances behind to see if any threats would emerge. The stewards decided She’s Symbolic would been higher up the frame without the interference and awarded the race to the late closer Glitter Running, and relegating Miss Elaine to fourth and elevating the favourite to third.

RACE 7 $350-300,000 CLAIMING (3YOS&UP) 1400 METRES/7 FURLONGS

Concur sped away from rivals early and was clear until surrendering tamely to the challenge of Hologram Shadow, whose effort was game but short-lived. The winner Minniffia, blessed with a good turn of finishing strength, absolutely warmed to the opportunity of using it once again. Hologram Shadow was bettered early inside the last 200 metres and Minniffia shot clear by seven lengths for the victory.

RACE 8 OPEN ALLOWANCE (3YOS & UPWARDS) 1200 METRES/6 FURLONGS

Sir Budget led and was pressed by Simply The Best until the pressure bore fruit with 300 metres to come. Having battled her way into the lead it was then a matter of whether or not Simply The Best could resist the challenge of the two-time Diamond Mile winner Seeking My Dream, who went third by less than three lengths from 600 metres out. Simply The Best ran particularly well inside the last 150 to hold the hard-won lead safe by just over one length. Runner-up Another Bullet was slowly into stride but came home well in the centre of the track.

RACE 9 MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT DIVISION 1 (3YOFILLIES) 1200 METRES/6 FURLONGS

Long odds-on favourite Fly First Class showed no sign of inexperience on debut. Francine led early and was menacingly pursued by Queen’s Highway who worked hard to get the lead from the now-tired Francine 300 metres out. Ridden to go after the battling leaders from third, Fly First Class split them effortlessly approaching the distance, thus displaying superior class which was emphasised by a near eight-length victory.

RACE 10 RESTRICTED ALLOWANCE V (4YOS&UP0 FILLIES&MARES) 1100 METRES/5 1/2FURS.

Bad Gal Hillary broke sharply but Storm Princess and Deal Marker soon shot by and proceeded to try and run each other into ground — which they both achieved — leaving them vulnerable to any horse ridden with more restraint. This turned out to be Bad Gal Hillary, who was taken off the inner rails to deliver a successful challenge to the dueling leaders at the distance. Surprisingly though, both front-runners, Storm Princess and Deal Marker, kept on well to be first and second runners-up, respectively.

RACE 11 44TH JAMAICA OAKS GRADE I (FILLIES) 1600 METRES/8 FURLONGS

Confirmed sprinter Sergeant Reckless led early, while Disability Charm was slowly into stride but had enough class to be soon prominent at the end of 400 metres. With just over 800 metres to come, the enthusiastic Disability Charm attacked the early pace-maker to turn for home in front. Honey Ryda went second on the inside rails two lengths behind and was pulled out to challenge on the outside of Disability Charm. Honey Ryda’s challenge was arrogantly repelled by the winner and it was left to Lici’s Pepsi, the stronger finisher, to claim the substantial runner-up prize. On the day, Disability Charm in executing this victory stayed on well enough to suggest the 2,000 metres of the Jamaica Oaks will be well within her capability.
