Disability Charm confirms superiority among fillies
The 1000 Guineas is now done and dusted and this publication congratulates owner Fisherman Stables — led by entertainer Cocoa Tea, trainer Patrick “Wacky” Lynch, jockey Robert Halledeen and breeder the late David Willers — on their resounding Classic success.
As is usually the case, The Supreme Racing Guide assesses the performances of all the horses in the 1000 Guineas in the order they finished.
FIRST — DISABILITY CHARM — Proved beyond any doubt that she is the best filly of the three-year-old lot in training at this time. Even though she was slowly out of the gates, Disability Charm was still able to easily move through the field before taking over. She then repelled all challenges offered to score by a length and a half. Disability Charm’s next assignment is the Jamaica Oaks in May, and there is now little doubt that she will start favourite. Disability Charm provided new stallion Soul Warrior with a Classic winner from his first crop. She has now earned over $3 million, which is not bad for a horse who was purchased in the Yearling Sale for $300,000. As Cocoa Tea would sing: “She loves me now”.
SECOND — LICI’S PEPSI — Was well off the pace for most of the race, but in her customary manner came charging with a furlong left and was rapidly closing in on the eventual winner, Disability Charm. The 1000 Guineas run by Lici’s Pepsi confirmed her steady rise up the ranks and gave her connections much hope for the upcoming 10-furlong Jamaica Oaks. A real plucky run by Lici’s Pepsi.
THIRD — HONEY RYDA — Honey Ryda, ever present during the course of the entire race, made her move in the final two furlongs after being well-placed but she found Disability Charm simply too hot to handle. She ran true to form as her 2-1 odds suggested, but showed that she may find it difficult over the longer distances.
FOURTH — FREE MARIE — The surprise package in the race. Free Marie entered the 1000 after just releasing the maiden tag and boosted her stocks with a performance which must have warmed the hearts of her connections. Well done to all concerned.
FIFTH — FAYROUZ — Backed to the tune of 3-1, Fayrouz failed to produce in the 1000 Guineas despite the presence of jockey Dane Nelson. Simply did not come up with the goods on the day, which may lead to a rethink of her situation by trainer Anthony Nunes.
SIXTH — ANNA LISA — The fact that Anna Lisa earned in the 1000 is a victory in itself.
SEVENTH — MY SISTER — Came in the 1000 Guineas with a lot of talk behind her chances, but did not deliver when it counted.
EIGHTH — SHE’S A BANKER — Was never a winning factor.
NINTH — BRANDY — The woes of the champion two-year-old filly continued as she was never in the race.
TENTH — BAND OF GOLD — A much better run was expected from Band Of Gold. Did encounter some traffic problems down the backstretch, but even that cannot remove the fact that it was a poor Guineas run.
ELEVENTH — SERGEANT RECKLESS — Confirmed that she is the speed of her age group but that was it for Sergeant Reckless.
TWELFTH — MISS FORMALITY — Miss Formality galloped within striking distance of the leaders, but lost her way from about three furlongs out and floundered thereafter.
DID NOT FINISH — NADESHICO — Pulled up in the race by her rider. It was later found out that Nadeshico had received a severe injury and will not be able to race again.
