KINGSTON, Jamaica — Two classrooms and a multimedia centre were damaged at the St Mary High School this morning, disclosed People’s National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament for Central St Mary Dr Morais Guy, as he appealed for help with rebuilding efforts.

Guy, who is an alumnus of St Mary High School, said while the infrastructure suffered damage, he is happy that no lives were lost or injuries suffered in the blaze.

He also commended students and staff for responding effectively to the threat, which, from all reports, could have been worse; but it is clear that the frequently rehearsed fire drills paid off today.

“I am deeply concerned about the setback this fire will have on the school and the implications for the students’ education, especially now, days before the start of external examinations,” Guy said. Noting that the repair could run into millions of dollars, Guy is calling on the community and wider stakeholder groups to join in an effort to restore the classrooms.

“As a past student and someone who continues to have deep connections to St Mary High, I will be spearheading the rebuilding efforts and will personally contribute $100,000 to a fund.”

Guy said he will be exploring all avenues possible to bring together funding and resources in kind to see to the speedy rebuilding and retrofitting of a new facility.

He is also calling on the past students as well as the past students associations to help in this noble effort.

“An account will be set up in the coming week under the custody of the school’s management and donations can be made through this medium. We continue to wish the school well as we continue to build with faith and courage,” Guy said.
