Sunshine Cat was understandably sent off the odds-on favourite but a lack of pace left her vulnerable to any horse with better early pace that could get the distance. Son Of Spartacus, who had been racing over sprint distances turned out to be precisely the horse to prove this reasoning correct. Making the early running very easily, Son Of Spartacus was a able at the end of 1100 metres to turn for home still fresh. The weight and distance came into view with 100 metres to run but by then he had enough momentum to last by a diminishing three-parts of a length from Movie Star with Sunshine Cat a half a length in third.

Jacko Links, whose best effort in seven starts was a 15-length third place behind the useful Drummer Boy went to the front heading into the Clubhouse Turn. With 800 metres to come Jacko Links was joined by Hot Ice alongside and Giaconda three wide with the patiently ridden Gift Of Law staying on in fourth — three lengths adrift and gaining ground. Giaconda was driven to lead at the distance but had no answer for the renewed challenge of Jacko Links. Saving ground from the bend Gift Of Law overtook the leaders 50 metres out to score with Jacko Links holding on for second and Empress Nicole staying on for third.

RACE 4 $180,000 CLAIMING 1000METRES/5FURLONGS STRAIGHT

Timeforacat, not known for her ability to stay the distance, set a fast pace and was clear to the top of the stretch. Court Call, who pursued from second, overtook the tired leader 300 metres out and kept on well to score by just under two lengths. Runner-up Counter Attack, slowly into stride, mended steadily throughout but the winning post arrived before he could deliver a challenge.

RACE 5 RESTRICTED ALLOWANCE V (4YOS&UP/NW2) 1200METRES/6FURLONGS

Rockdale because of his early speed, freshness (only one race in February 2018 since December) and his coveted number one post-position draw was easy to back with confidence. Ridden to lead early, Rockdale was chased by Amar to the distance. Quickening at this point to go clear, Rockdale left Amar trailing in his wake. Eddie’s Princess came home strongly for second but Rockdale had poached too much of a lead to be caught.

RACE 6 MAIDEN CONDITION (THREE-YEAR-OLDS) 1000METRES/5FURLONGS ROUND

Zillow, who had prepared very well for his debut, impressed in the post parade and went to the front early but was pressed by the no less impressively conformed Dee Danger out for his second race. The two leaders had Apollo Bay and Son Son close up in behind. With 500 metres to come Dee Danger was in front and beginning to put his pursuers in trouble. At the 200-metre mark it began to emerge that Dee Danger was of much better class, sprinting clear to score by six widening lengths. Zillow ran promisingly in holding on for second and in the near future is unlikely to be up against any opponent as smart as the winner here.

RACE 7 OVERNIGHT ALLOWANCE (3YOS&UPWARDS1820METRES/ 9FURLS+25YARDS

Jamai Raja, pursued by Golden Bullet and Birdie My Love into the backstretch, led on a tight rein. With 800 metres left in the race, the leader quickened with Birdie My Love being ridden to get on terms. Timeforarms made a sharp move from 850 metres to run and was able to split Birdie My Love and Golden Bullet to go in pursuit of the leader from the top of the stretch. At nine-years old Timeforarms demonstrated he still has plenty of ability and outstayed rivals to score by five lengths. Eight-year old Royal Vibes gave away many lengths at the start but still managed to be only a neck behind runner-up Jamai Raja at the finish.

RACE 8 RESTRICTED ALLOWANCE IV (4YOS&UPWARDS/NW3) 1400METRES/7FURLONGS

Stanislaus and Star battled for the lead for 800 metres until the latter went clear with 500 to run and the former getting tired. Radical, always threatening was taken to the outside of Star and kept him under pressure to assume the lead 150 metres out. Radical won by four lengths to give returning jockey Gary Richards, who was away for over 15 years, a well-received return to the winner’s enclosure. Star remained clear for his share while Uncle Frank overcame a bad start to end up third.

RACE 9 RESTRICTED ALLOWANCE V (5YOS&UP/NW3) 1600 METRES/8FURLONGS

Smokescreen, pursued by Hail Mary, led comfortably for 1200 metres but ran away for the inner rails to go very wide at the final part of the home turn. The Nextbigting ran in third and got by the tiring Hail Mary to go second but could not quicken to threaten the wide front running Smokescreen seriously. In mid-pack early Bigman Union produced a strong run up the inner rails to strike the front inside the last 200 metres and score by nearly five lengths.

RACE 10 44TH JAMAICA 2000 GUINEAS (3YOCOLTS&GELDINGS) 1600METRES/8FURLONGS

Commander Two flew out of post position 15 to establish the early strategic and eventually decisive stranglehold advantage. Without Exception moved very well early to keep tabs on the leader and they set a pace that had the field, with the exclusion of Western Legend in trouble fully 1000 metres out. Commander Two after turning for home kept finding speed, strength and stamina to stay on top in spite of pressure from Without Exception whose 1000 metres round experimental victory nine days prior was timely. Commander Two’s momentum was diminishing 50 metres out with Western Legend staying on strongest while Marquesas ran on one paced for fourth. The winning post arrived in time for Commander Two to last by a neck and set off the inevitable debate as which of this top four is likely to be more effective over the distances of the longer Classics with top three fillies, Disability Charm, Lici’s Pepsi and Honey Ryda, clearly showing staying capabilities as well.
