NADESHICO SUFFERS MAJOR INJURY

Promising three-year-old filly Nadeshico, trained by Anthony Nunes, broke her knee shortly after the start of the 1000 Guineas on Saturday. Nunes has since informed that his dark brown filly by Natural Selection – First Sushi will not race again. “Unfortunately Nadeshico broke her knee during the race on Saturday, and right now the main objective is to keep her alive. To this end, the vet has placed the affected leg in a cast and the hope is that with time she can get better and continue to play a role in racing — not on the track, but as a broodmare,” Nunes indicated. Nadeshico ended her racing career with two wins from eight starts, with four second-place finishes and earnings of close to $2 million.

SEVEN HORSES CLAIMED ON SUNDAY

Seven horses were claimed on the 10-race 2000 Guineas Race Day at Caymanas Park on Sunday, April 15. Steven Todd claimed Fortuneonehundred for owner Patrick Hall from Adin Williams; Maurice Crooks claimed Differentgeneration for owner Craig Russell from Johnny Wilmot; Randall Scott claimed Sweet Peppa for owner Clifton Francis from Richard Azan; and Anthony Nunes claimed Big Black Nation for owner Andrew Donalds from Paul Smith from the second race. All these claims were made for $350,000. In the fourth race on a $180,000 claiming tag, One Great Train was claimed from Ralph Roberts by Welsh Soutar for owner Mr JPS; Bars Of Gold was claimed from Phillip Thompson by Paul Smith for owner Deleta Brewster; and Counter Attack was taken from Tyrone Prince by Ryan Darby for owner Aaron Gallimore.

SON OF SPARTACUS, DEE DANGER GET ACROSS THE WINNING LINE

Four-year-old Son Of Spartacus and three-year-old Dee Danger were both able to win their first race at Caymanas Park on Sunday last, April 15, 2018. Son Of Spartacus (He’stherealthing – Wagon Wheel), owned and trained by Ftizroy Glispie and ridden by apprentice Bebeto Harvey, made every post a winning one in a maiden condition race for nativebred four-year-olds and upward over seven and a half furlongs (1,500m). Son Of Spartacus, who was running for the fifth time, won by a length ahead of Moviestar (Oneil Beckford) and Sunshine Cat (Anthony Thomas), in that order, in a time of 1:38.1. After leaving the starting gates, Dee Danger (Forest Danger – Circle The Heart), under Oneil Mullings, surrounded Zillow (Rayan Wilson) on the lead and began to open up going around the half mile (800m) in the five-furlong (1000m) event on the round course. Entering the lane, Mullings asked his mount to go and the bay colt responded by powering to a six-length win over Zillow and Axle Rod (Dick Cardenas).

GIFT OF LAW A JAMAICA OAKS POSSIBILITY, SAYS TRAINER LOUIS RICHARDS

After Gift Of Law’s fighting win in a maiden special weight event for native-bred three-year-olds on Sunday (April 15) over 10 furlongs (2,000m), trainer Louis Richards is of the belief that his chestnut filly has given him hope of being a possible starter in the Jamaica Oaks. The Jamaica Oaks is the second Classic race for fillies and takes place over 10 furlongs (2,000m) on May 5, 2018. Jockey Shane Ellis held the Lopez Dream Stables-owned Gift Of Law off the pace in the early exchanges and watched as Jacko Links (Javaniel Patterson) dictated the pace. Ellis positioned Gift Of Law in fourth place from six furlongs (1,200m) out, just waiting to pounce on the leaders. Jacko Links, Hot Ice (Oneil Scott) and Giaconda (Dick Cardenas) were then locked in a duel approaching the home turn, with Giaconda pointing at the top of the lane. Hugging the inside rails, thereby taking the shortest route for the stretch drive, Gift Of Law came with a strong run and got up in time to beat Jacko Links, Empress Nicole (Anthony Thomas) and Giaconda, in that order, by half a length. Richards then indicated that the change of racing equipment and rider were the reasons for his charge’s win on Sunday. Richards had removed the visor and added the blinkers on Gift Of Law. “Well, the change of equipment and the jockey made the difference. The performance was very good. I mean, she loves the distance, as she doesn’t like it going short. She loves to relax, and that is good with her. If she continues on the same path, Gift Of Law will go straight into the Jamaica Oaks and I think she will run a good race,” Richards said.
