Price of crime is our expensive lives
Dear Editor,
The termite called crime is actively eating away the lives of precious Jamaicans while our leaders dodge the ball and show fingers in Parliament.
Crime has been a long-standing problem crossing administrations. It has got progressively worse since Independence; no one is being spared the wrath of these new breed of dog-hearted criminals who are not daunted by states of emergency or zones of special operations.
Crime is not a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) or People’s National Party (PNP) problem; it’s a Jamaica problem, and it’s full time our politicians put politics aside and come together to fight against the monsters taking the fight to the security forces.
Vice-president of the PNP Dr Fenton Ferguson put it perfectly when he said: “… It is unfair that the burden of crime be placed at the feet of the national security minister.”
He also said that, “We can’t be talking about ‘Jamaica, land we love,’ and at the political level we continue to be tribalistic and divided’.” Suffice it to say, the vice-president was bashed for his comments. Instead of working together to fix what is broken, the time is spent showing fingers and being hostile to each other exploiting parliamentary immunity.
There needs to be a politically united approach to fighting crime from 81 Duke Street, and there needs to be a crime plan other than the ‘enhanced security measures’, otherwise we will continue to pay the price with our expensive lives and the dearly beloved tourism industry and health sector will continue to suffer.
