Perkins’ dream comes Wins FLOW Fan-tastic Experience to visit Manchester United
There is a tattoo reading MUFC on the inside of his finger signifying the love Alex Perkins has for Manchester United.
The top English club has been his favourite team all his life being that his father Donovan Perkins, former president and CEO of Sagicor Bank, is a staunch fan of the club.
But it was 15 years ago that Alex Perkins took his support for Manchester United to a different level.
It was always his dream to visit the “Theatre of Dreams” — Old Trafford — and that is now a reality for the 25-year-old.
Perkins is the winner of the FLOW Fan-tastic Experience competition which will take him and a guest (his father) to England to watch the game between Manchester United and Watford next week Sunday, May 13.
“I might shed a tear or something,” said young Perkins, of when he sets foot in Old Trafford.
“I am just going to take a deep breath and take it all in. Just to think about everything I have seen over the years that made me a big supporter of this club. All those memories will come back to my mind,” he said.
Telecommunications firm FLOW sponsored the competition with the Jamaica Observer and British Airways and Perkins, who lives in Freeport, Montego Bay, won the competition among the newspaper’s readers.
“It’s a great feeling. I have been trying to line up a trip like this for a while so for FLOW and the Observer to come up with a competition like this and for me to enter and win is just unbelievable. These things happen in life and my dedication to this club have paid off a bit here,” said Perkins.
FLOW’s Kim Lee, head of retail, marketing and sponsorships, said her organisation is very proud of the partnership they have with the English Premier League and Manchester United.
The FLOW Fan-tastic Experience was kind of dream out of a conversation with the Observer. We were talking about how do we get our football fans engaged,” Lee explained.
“We couldn’t have done it without the Observer and British Airways, but once they get there the experience is going be a fantastic one. They will be driven to Manchester and they will be staying at a hotel three minutes from the stadium and can see the stadium from their window,” noted Lee.
“They will get to visit the museum and they will be hosted for the game. It’s a very good trip. We are really geared towards our football fans. If you love your team this would be something you truly want to do,” she added.
“We were surprised by some of the love they had for their teams. Some persons sent us pictures of them kissing their jerseys, their memorabilia.
“It takes a certain level of loyalty to want to express yourself and open up yourself to enter something like this, and we are so thrilled that people took the time to enter,” said Lee.
Perkins’ trip would not be possible without the input of British Airways and Georgette Manning, regional commercial manager, North Caribbean, said the airline is just excited as the winner and he will be given top-class World Traveller treatment.
“We have never done anything like this before and lucky winner Alex will be flying off to London and the moment he gets on board he will be totally pampered with the different courses of meals that we will offer on board,” said Manning.
May 13 can’t come too quick for Alex Perkins as he looks forward to meet and greet the Manchester United team including photo options with his two favourite players Anthony Martial and Ander Herrera. If he is lucky he might even run into his all-time favourite player Paul Scholes.
