Shaw leads slaughter as Girlz maul Guadeloupe 13-0
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Like lambs to slaughter, minnows Guadeloupe offered no resistance as the vastly superior Jamaica mauled them 13-0 in their opening CONCACAF Caribbean Women’s Group B World Cup qualifying game at the Stade Sylvio Cator here yesterday.
The massacre was led by a six-timer from striker Khadija Shaw (4th, 37th, 42nd, 45th, 62nd and 73rd), followed by a brace from Dominique Bond-Flasza (43rd, 70th) and 17-year-old Giselle Washington (61st, 79th) — the last making her senior team debut.
There were one apiece from Deneisha Blackwood (23rd), Captain Konya Plummer (33rd), and another Under-20 representative substitute Kevena Reid (83rd) — the last making her senior team debut.
The win saw the Jamaicans jumping into a early lead with three points and a very healthy goal difference as they hunt the lone qualifying spot from the group to the final round scheduled for August 25 to September 2.
Hosts Haiti and Martinique were scheduled to meet in the other group fixture at press time.
Before the floodgates were swung open, Jamaica were cautious in their approach, but it was not long before they got into their stride.
Shaw got the show on the road when she fired past Meline Bouimba in goal for Guadeloupe after a long pass from Allyson Swaby at the back caught the defence flat-footed.
The Jamaicans squandered numerous chances before Blackwood eventually doubled the lead with a well-taken left-footed effort from the top of the box, which eluded the reach of the diminutive Bouimba diving full stretch to her left.
Plummer then made it 3-0 when she arrived at the back post to easily tap in a pass from Shaw.
And four minutes later Shaw got her second with a sweet turn of her marker before rifling a right-footed shot into the back of the net.
From there, it rained goals, with the first coming through Shaw who capitalised on a defensive mix-up to easily slot past Bouimba in a one-on-one situation. She turned provider a minute later, assisting Bond-Flasza to slot home from close range.
And Shaw then registered her fourth when a pass from the middle of the park found her open and no defender bothered to give chase, allowing her to tap home, putting Jamaica 7-0 up at the break.
The Jamaicans came out in the same vein on the resumption and forced two good saves from Bouimba, before they continued to add to their tally.
Blackwood worked the left side in imperious fashion, ending with a low ball in for skipper Washington, who made no mistakes from close range.
A minute later Shaw again broke away from the defence and fired past the advancing goaltender.
After camping out in the Guadeloupe half of the field in great numbers like a pack of hungry wolves, the Jamaicans took turns at attacking their opponents’ goal at will, but at that point, the hunt was fruitless.
However, on the 70th minute Bond-Flasza completed her brace with a swirling left-footer from the top of the 18-yard box.
Three minutes later, Reid then burst into the box before laying off a pass for Shaw to convert.
On the next goal in minute 79, Washington broke down the middle, outpacing the last defender before burying the ball past the hapless goalie.
Reid then completed the onslaught when she finished off a solo run with a firm right-footed shot from close range.
