Win or lose, PNP’s going to get points in NIDS fight
Dear Editor,
The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has decided to take the Government to the Supreme Court over the national identification system. As a Labourite, I strongly believe the Jamaica Labour Party Administration won’t win that case. Also, even if the PNP loses that case they will be seen as winners because they fought to protect the privacy of us Jamaicans.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has a lot to lose if he loses this NIDS battle in court. He, like in the ‘Senate letter-gate saga’, will be seen as a dictator and will be playing into the PNP’s hands.
My recommendation is that, since the PNP is in agreement with the principle of the NIDS, go back to the table with them, otherwise:
1. NIDS should not be mandatory for our own citizens.
2. Get rid off the biometric elements for our own citizens.
3. Get rid off or dramatically reduce the fines and sentences for some NIDS breaches.
