MONTEGO BAY, St James — A member of the defence team representing popular dancehall artiste Tommy Lee Sparta says they will be writing to Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson about the circulation on social media of a semi-nude photo believed to be that of his client in custody.

The photo shows a man dressed in what appears to be underpants only in a cell.

“I was made aware of that photo, and I find it very unprofessional, and we do intend to write to the relevant authorities, in particular the commissioner of police, to ascertain why is it that this is being done while somebody is a guest of the State or in custody,” said attorney-at-law Donahue Martin.

“It had to have been taken by a member… of the police force, and I find it, as I said, extremely unprofessional,” he added.

Tommy Lee Sparta, whose real name is Leroy Russell, was detained early Sunday morning in St Andrew at an ATM shortly after he had left the finals of the popular Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall competition. He was later transferred to St James.

It is not known where the photo was taken. However, Martin said perhaps further details will be known after the commissioner receives the letter.

Meanwhile, the case involving Russell, who remains in custody in St James, is to be heard for the second time in the St James Parish Court next week Tuesday.

Yesterday, Parish Court Judge Sandria Wong Small gave the police seven days to justify the continued detention of Russell when the matter was heard in the St James Parish Court.

The order by the judge follows a habeas corpus application made by the defence team yesterday afternoon.

Russell has had run-ins with the law in the past. Last year, the police said that he was wanted for questioning in relation to ongoing violence in sections of St James.

Russell was also listed last year by detectives from the Kingston Eastern division as a person of interest in relation to a shooting in the capital city.
