Sharon Miller to head Jamaica’s mission in Brazil
Thirty-five-year foreign service veteran Sharon Miller has been named Jamaica’s Ambassador-designate to Brazil.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson Smith announced the appointment Monday, lauding Miller’s “vast experience and expertise in bilateral and multilateral negotiations”.
Miller is the current director of the Economic Affairs Department at the Foreign Ministry and a member of the Permanent Mission to the International Seabed Authority, headquartered in Kingston.
She has previously served as deputy chief of mission at the Jamaican Embassy in Washington, DC, with concurrent accreditation to the Permanent Mission of Jamaica to the Organization of American States, and has also previously held the position of deputy high commissioner at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa, Canada.
The ambassador-designate, who has represented Jamaica in numerous international fora, has also sat on various national boards and committees.
She counts amongst her most recent accomplishments her role as lead negotiator for the concluding Round of the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean (Principle 10), in San José, Costa Rica, in March.
“Mrs Miller’s vast experience and expertise in bilateral and multilateral negotiations, including economic and sustainable developmental matters, are important assets for our top diplomat in Brazil, and the other countries to which the Brazil mission is accredited, and with which we are pursuing deeper bilateral ties, especially in trade, tourism and investment,” said Minister Johnson Smith.
Miller holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration and has done graduate work in development studies. She is married, has two children, and loves the performing arts and music.
She is to assume duties in Brasilia in June 2018.
