It was a memorable day for 17-time champion trainer Wayne DaCosta at Caymanas Park yesterday.

Not only did he watch his talented Horse of the Year She’s A Maneater romp home in the $1.75-million Lotto Sprint, but also witnessed Drummer Boy capping off a four-timer in the 78th running of the $3-million Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup.

It may have been 10 furlongs (2,000m), but Drummer Boy went straight to the lead and outstayed rivals to win the native-bred three-year-old Futurity event by three and a three quarters of a length in a time of 2:10.3.

“It is a very good feeling winning both big races today (yesterday). Both horses ran well and I am proud of them. We never planned for Drummer Boy to lead, but the pace was so slow, he couldn’t help but lead. Jockey Gary Richards just paced him along and going towards the half mile he put six lengths on the field and it was all over from there,” DaCosta said.

The win was DaCosta’s fifth in the Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup. The champion trainer won with Thornbird in 1984, Good Prospect in 1999, Lifeisjustforliving in 2010, and All Correct via the route of disqualification in 2012.

For Richards, it was the biggest win of his career and he was delighted. “Right now I am very happy, I am a very happy man — that is all I can say right now,” he said.

DaCosta’s other winners on the day were Luana (Gary Richards) in the sixth race and Radical (Gary Richards) in the ninth race as Richards brought home his three-timer.

Breaking from the number one draw in the field of 11, Drummer Boy took over the lead and guided rivals sharply around the Clubhouse turn, chased by Lightning McQueen and Outrageous Taj.

Drummer Boy continued to lead down the backstretch, at which time he slowed down the pace a bit and let My Sister get within a length of him.

Approaching the half mile, Drummer Boy injected some pace and opened up some six lengths on the field with a group of horses struggling behind.

Turning for home, Drummer Boy turned on the pressure and looked as if he was going to turn the race into a possession, but he shortened just a bit inside the final furlong (100m).

Champion two-year-old of season Marquesas (Shane Ellis) ran his best race this season to finish in second place, a neck ahead of Royal Aviator (Dane Dawkins) in third.
