NEW YORK (AP) — Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Justify won’t have to further contend with Audible in pursuit of the colt’s bid for the Triple Crown.
Trainer Todd Pletcher said Friday that Audible will be pointed toward a summer campaign, with the US$600,000 Jim Dandy at Saratoga on July 28 or the US$1-million Haskel Invitational on July 29 being the top options for his next start.
Florida Derby winner Audible finished third in the Kentucky Derby. Both Justify and Audible are co-owned by WinStar Farm and there had been much speculation whether the owners would pit them against each other when Justify tries to complete a Triple Crown sweep in the Belmont on June 9.
Elliott Walden, WinStar president and CEO, was at Belmont Park on Friday to see Audible and discussed the situation with Pletcher.
The trainer says Audible isn’t doing as well as he was leading into the May 5 Derby and he doesn’t think the colt is where he needs to be to win the 1 ½-mile Belmont.
However, Noble Indy is a possibility to run in the Belmont. He finished 17th in the Kentucky Derby and is also co-owned by WinStar. Pletcher said Noble Indy put himself into the Belmont mix after completing a half-mile workout Friday.
RARE WINNER FOR O’BRIEN WHITE
Jockey O’Brien White scored a rare win aboard Smashing One, who romped home in the first race on the Lotto Classic Race Day at Caymanas Park on Saturday last.
The race was a Restricted Allowance event for native-bred five-year-olds and upward non-winners of two over eight and and a half furlongs (1,700m).
After a couple of strides from the off, White held his mount in second place as Cat’s Rigger (Prince Holder) took the early lead.
Leaving the six-furlong (1,200m) point and heading towards the five-furlong (1,000m) marker, Ninelifecat (Doushane Gordon) joined Smashing One and both tried to go in chase of the leader, who looked strong on the front end.
However, White urged his mount and Smashing One again went after the leader at the half-mile (800m), gaining with every stride.
Cat’s Rigger turned for home on the lead but began to drift in deep stretch, while Smashing One held the inside rails and, running straight, took the advantage and scored an emphatic win over Cat’s Rigger.
Mary’s Gold (Oneil Beckford) outbattled Swagg Boss (Leo Miller) for third place. The win was White’s first for the season.
FOUR STRAIGHT WINS FOR LIKE A LADY
While it can be said that it has happened in the past, nowadays it is a rarity to witness a horse winning four consecutive races, especially at the claiming level.
Such was the case on Saturday when Like A Lady defeated rivals in the Lotto Dream Trophy over five and a half furlongs (1,100m).
Like A Lady, under Robert Halledeen, had to battle every inch of the way for her halflength win in a time of 1:09.0. At the off, Like A Lady was challenged by Dinner By Seven (Bebeto Harvey) as the two battled coming into the lane.
After Like A Lady got rid of Dinner By Seven in deep stretch, the grey mare then had to withstand the late surge of Reassurance (Gary Richards) and Sweet Dimension (Hakeem Pottinger) in that order.
All of Like A Lady’s wins have been achieved at the $450,000- $400,000 claiming level. Trained by Phillip Elliott, Like A Lady now boasts a career record of eight wins and five second-place finishes from 37 starts, with earnings of over $4 million.
TRAINER ERROL POTTINGER NOTCHES THIRD WIN
Veteran trainer Errol Pottinger notched his third winner of the 2018 racing season when Shade Of Beauty, ridden by Phillip Parchment, won the fifth race over five furlongs (1,000m) straight on Saturday.
Shade Of Beauty (Storm Craft – Velocity) battled with Pizarro (Linton Steadman) for most of the way before drawing off inside the furlong (200m) to win easily by 2 ¾ lengths in a time of 1:01.4.
Pizarro held well for second place, with Woodhouse (Oneil Scott) third and Samora (Roshane Johnson) in fourth place.
CHEROKEE WAY, LUANA RELEASE MAIDEN TAGS
Cherokee Way, trained by Gary Subratie and Luana by Wayne DaCosta were able to release their maiden tags on the 11-race Lotto Race Day programme at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Cherokee Way and Luana won divisions one and two, respectively, of the maiden condition Lotto “Challenge” Trophy over six and a half furlongs (1,300m).
Ridden by Aaron Chatrie, Cherokee Way chased Dreamingofanna (Prince Holder) from the start of the race till the furlong pole, where she eventually got up in the nick of time to beat the leader by a neck in 1:23.3.
Luana, ridden by Gary Richards, sat behind the early pace before coming with a strong run at the top of the lane to run out an easy winner in a time of 1:23.2.
Legal Dancer, Chukka Boy and Pandora’s Box followed the winner in that order to the wire.
EASY DOES IT FOR BIG BLACK NATION
It was expected to be a two-horse battle but instead, it turned out to be a walk in the park for Big Black Nation, trained by Anthony Nunes and ridden by Shane Ellis.
Big Black Nation and Vision Of Gold were both dropping down in class to the $180,000 claiming level, with Big Black Nation installed as the 4-5 favourite and Vision Of Gold at even money.
Both horses broke well, with Vision Of Gold (Kerry-Gayl Robinson) getting the lead over Big Black Nation in the early exchange.
However, approaching the final bend, Big Black Nation took over and never looked back as the dark bay gelding ran out an easy winner by 10 ¼ lengths over Vision Of Gold.
The Salesman (Phillip Parchment) finished third and Nasdaq Princess.
FIVE HORSES CLAIMED ON SATURDAY
Like A Lady, who won the second race, was claimed from Phillip Elliott by trainer Dennis Thwaites for Rising Star for $450,000.
Woodhouse was claimed from Richard Azan by Tyrone Prince for Michael Wray; while Pizarro was taken from Anthony Nunes by Lawrence Freemantle for Edward Hinds from the fifth race. Both of these claims were made for $250,000.
In the seventh race on a $180,000 claiming tag, Vision Of Gold was claimed from Junior Small by Percy Tomlinson for Glen Longmore, and Big Black Nation was claimed from Anthony Nunes by Alford Brown for Barsher.
