The ‘beat’ continues in derby
Trainer Wayne DaCosta is confirming with the Supreme Racing Guide that his Lotto Classic, for the Governor’s Cup, winner Drummer Boy races next on June 30 in the Jamaica Derby.
In a post-Lotto Classic race interview last Sunday afternoon, DaCosta also revealed that Drummer Boy came out of last Saturday’s engagement in good health condition.
“Yes, based on preliminary checks, Drummer Boy is in fine fettle after his victory in the Lotto Classic. He came out of the race well and has eaten well also. Naturally, he will be watched carefully to ensure that he ( Drummer Boy) stays healthy and well.
“Now I will set about preparing him as best as I can for his next race which I can confirm is the 12-furlong Jamaica Derby which is down on the programme to be run at the end of next month,” the 17-time champion trainer shared.
In a dominant run in the Lotto Classic on Saturday (May 26, 2018) Drummer Boy, for the first time in his eight career starts, set off in front from the number one post position with jockey Gary Richards giving guidance.
That’s the way the race remained for 10 furlongs, as Drummer Boy just kept on going and going to the winning post to score by close to four lengths, posting a winning time of 2:10.3 seconds. Second went to Marquesas, with Royal Aviator third.
Going into the 12-furlong Jamaica Derby, the question will always arise — can Drummer Boy get the distance?
“I think Drummer Boy will get 12 furlongs even considering that he was coming back a bit in the Lotto Classic. Looking at his performance on Saturday (May 26), it could be that he needed the race to get sharper — we will just have to wait and see,” DaCosta said while indicating that the main dangers to Drummer Boy in the Derby are Commander Two, Marquesas, Royal Aviator and Oak winner, Fayrouz.
