US surgeons to do Jamaica’s first liver transplants
DELAWARE, United States (AP) — Delaware surgeons are planning to head to Jamaica this summer to perform the first liver transplants ever undertaken on the Caribbean island.
The two Jamaican patients are both young boys, one just nine months old. They both suffer from a rare disease that can impact babies called biliary atresia.
The News Journal of Wilmington reports that the surgeons from Nemours/Alfred I duPont Hospital for Children will head to Jamaica’s capital of Kingston in July.
The goal is to teach and assist Jamaican physicians with liver transplants over the next couple of years so they will be able to perform those operations independently.
Nemours surgeon Dr Stephen Dunn has previously trained medical colleagues on how to do liver transplant operations in Bolivia and India.
