Defending champions Torrington Early Childhood Institute staved off their rivals to amass a combined team score of 122 points and retain their title at the 2018 Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) Basic Schools Athletics Championships at National Stadium last Friday. The champions sealed the title by winning the penultimate event, the 4×100 metres relay open for girls, and then placing ahead of both Providence Heights Infant of St James, and Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB)/RJR in the final event, the 4x100m relay open for boys.

Finishing second was Providence Heights with 117.5 points, followed by Citizen’s Advice Bureau/RJR on 115, Spanish Town Infant with 93.5, Laura’s Basic on 81.5, and St Francis Primary with 78, among the top schools.

Torrington also captured the girls’ section with 72 points ahead of Providence Heights on 69, Citizen’s Advice Bureau/RJR with 66, and Spanish Town with 38 points, while the boys’ section was won by St Francis Primary and Infant with 50 points ahead of Torrington Early Childhood on 49, Citizen’s Advice Bureau/RJR, also on 49, and Providence Heights with 48.5 points.

Odean Slater of Laura’s Basic won the Class One boys’ 80 metres final in 13.35 seconds, ahead of Aaron McFarlane of Seaview Early Childhood in 13.40, and Liam Massias from St Francis Primary in 13.64 seconds.

Bianca Barrett of Providence Heights won the Class One girls’ 80 metres final in 13.33 seconds, ahead of Keirah Pinnock also of Providence Heights in 13.69 and Clarke Chenelle of Central Branch, with 13.75 seconds.

Zuriel Perry from SJ Kids Castle captured the Class Two boys’ 60m final in 10.16 seconds ahead of Chadwayne Savage of Providence Heights in 10.37, and Kareem Blanchard of CAB/RJR in 10.48 seconds.

The Class Two girls’ 60m final was won by Franchesca Herron of CAB/RJR in 10.42 seconds, ahead of Shanayah Jacques of Red Hills Basic (10.55) and Teana Campbell of Providence Heights in 10.61 seconds.

Xiheir Buchanan of Grace Temple Basic captured the Class Three boys’ 30m final in 5.91 seconds from Nykiel Johnson of Liguanea Prep (6.12), and Seabon Palmer of Harvest Temple in 6.16 seconds.

Nebraska Campbell of Providence Heights won the Class Three girls’ 30m final in 6.44 seconds ahead of Anastasia Riley of Lalyce Gray (6.56), and Ayesha Morris of Spanish Town in 6.65 seconds.

Ryan Brown from Spanish Town was the winner of the boys’ standing long jump with a distance of 1.72 metres ahead of Tyreece Green of Spanish Town with 1.65, and Imaney Samuels of Laura’s Basic with 1.65 metres.

Laura’s Basic captured the boys’ 4×100 metres relay open in a time of 1:08.23 minutes ahead of Spanish Town Infant, and St Francis Primary and Infant.

Providence’s winning time in the girls’ 4×100 metres open was 1:11.77 minutes ahead of Providence Heights (1:13.42), and Spanish Town Infant with 1:14.17.

The Class One boys’ 4x50m relay was won by Laura’s Basic in 35.97 seconds from Providence Heights (36.09), and St Francis Primary and Infant with 36.19 seconds.

Providence Heights won the Class Three boys’ 4×25 metres relay in 23.30 seconds ahead of Torrington Early Childhood (23.51), and CAB/RJR in 23.71 seconds.

St Francis Primary and Infant won the Class Three girls’ 4×25 metres relay in 24.80 seconds, followed by Torrington Early Childhood (24.90), and CAB/RJR in 24.98 seconds.

Meanwhile, Nebraska Campbell from Providence Heights was the overall girls’ champion with 16 points, while Lancejay Sterling was the overall boys’ champion with 13.5 points.

Class Keirah Pinnock of Providence Heights was the Class One girls’ champion with 14 points, while Ryan Angus of Laura’s Basic was the Class Two girls’ champion with 11.5 points.

Class Two champion boy was Zadaine Roberts of Ascot Basic with 11 points, with the Class Two girls’ champion being Franchesca Herron of CAB/RJR with 12 points.

Samir McLarty of Laura’s Basic and Xiheir Buchanhan of Grace Temple were joint winners of the Class Three champion, both having nine points.
