Not the greatest show on Earth
Dear Editor,
Do you know who brought forth this popular statement: The greatest show on Earth?
Many times, on our national television, I see that they have been using that statement in a commercial in regard to FIFA World Cup football. Football lovers are now using it like a slogan for the game of football. And what they seem to be telling us is that football — World Cup football — is the greatest show, the greatest sport, the greatest game on Earth.
And why do they say that? Is it because they believe it draws more crowds? Is it the most popular game?
Well, whatever they want to think or believe, I am not in agreement with them.
For me, the Olympics is superior to World Cup football; it’s the greatest show on earth — not football.
The Olympic Games draws more crowds, it is more exciting, and it creates more noise and attention too. And there are more television viewers when it comes to the Olympics than World Cup football.
The opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games say it all. The people are uncountable.
The second runner-up to the Olympics, as the greatest sports event in this world, is the World Championships. It draws more crowds, more television viewers, and it’s more exciting and noisier than football too.
So, I put it in this form: (1) Olympics (2) World Championships (3) World Cup football.
It’s so good listening to the national anthems being played at these games. It’s time for us to hear an international anthem — a collective anthem for all the countries — known as the global anthem. When will that be?
