DaCosta/Thomas combination lands Sunday triple
The combination of leading trainer Wayne DaCosta and leading rider Anthony Thomas posted a three-timer to highlight the 10-race programme at Caymanas Park yesterday.
The duo’s winners included Uncle Frank, who beat stable companion Radical by half a length in a titanic tussle to wire to win the $1.15-million Owen Silvera Memorial Cup feature over one mile (1,600m).
After a couple of strides from the start, Uncle Frank was neatly settled in second on the inside rails behind Birdie My Love, who was rushed to take up the lead by her rider Odeen Edwards as Radical (Gary Richards) raced in third ahead of Marvellous Marva (Mellisa Ward).
Leaving the six-furlong (1,200m) point, Uncle Frank tried to test Birdie My Love, looking to steal the march on rivals.
Thomas switched Uncle Frank from off the rails and was joined by Radical and Marvellous Marva approaching the final bend. Birdie My Love eventually gave way in deep stretch as Uncle Frank and Radical took over, and the battle for supremacy began as neither one was giving up.
Thomas kept his mount well balanced and Uncle Frank found extra for the win — his second victory in a week. Marvellous Marva, who had to go four wide at the furlong (200m), came on strong in the end for third position.
At the end of the Open Allowance event for three-year-olds and upward, a final time of 1:39.1 was posted with splits of 24.1, 47.1 and 1:11.4.
The other winners for DaCosta and Thomas were Dysfunctional in the fifth race and Winter Is Coming in the 11th and final.
Racing continues next Saturday.
