J’can jockey Patrick Henry suffers concussion in fall at US racetrack
WASHINGTON DC, United States (CMC) — Jamaican jockey Patrick Henry suffered a mild concussion and back contusion, after taking a tumble in the fifth race of the nine-card programme at Emerald Downs in Auburn Washington DC on Sunday.
Riding 15-1 outsider Shopping Tizzy in the fifth race over a mile, Henry was carrying the three-year-old filly to victory in the stretch when she suddenly veered in, tossing him from the saddle.
He went down hard and appeared to be hit by his horse’s rear leg or the oncoming 14-1 choice Dakota Tango. He lay motionless for several minutes before being rushed to Valley Medical Centre, half-hour’s drive away in Renton.
The race was won by Barbadian Rocco Bowen aboard favourite Belle of Rainier.
Henry is in his first season in the Pacific northwest, and has ridden seven winners from 73 mounts.
In his only other ride in race three, Henry finished fourth with 4-1 bet Whistlin’ Laddie in a six furlong trip, as 4-5 choice Bear Minimum, ridden by Javier Matias, won by 2-1/2 lengths.
