Bimini still has more to offer — trainer Smellie
After Bimini’s upset win in the top-rated Overnight Allowance company on Saturday, owner/trainer Patrick Smellie is informing that his six-year-old chestnut mare still has a lot more to offer before calling it a day.
Bimini returned to the track following a 21-day rest with a change of equipment — blinkers in place of the visors — and got home by a head, completing the five-furlong (1,000m) round dash in a reasonably good time of 1:00.3 built on fractions of 22.4, 46 flat.
Sent off at odds of 14-1 and ridden by the apprentice Odeen Edwards, Bimini was held off the pace as Polly B, Talented Tony K and Sir Budget set the early pace.
Bimini found racing room on the inside rails turning for home and went past the leaders, but had to keep the momentum going to hold off the fast-finishing Crucial Appeal under leading rider Anthony Thomas. Polly B (Oneil Beckford) was third and Sir Budget (Gary Richards) fourth.
“I feel ecstatic. I am very happy. This is a horse that I love because she has shown us from her introduction to racing that she has heart. She did not produce any Classic performances, but she showed that she was a good, little horse as she demonstrated today.
“I am very pleased with the performance and also pleased that the breeders, including Donald Wehby, were here to see her performance as they had turned her over to me. Judging from the time recorded from her winning run, she seems to have much more left to offer.”
He continued: “Well I do not think that she can go much further. She probably can earn up in Open Allowance where she will go now, but soon after that I think we will take her to the breeding shed.”
