Sagicor banks on racing sponsorship
Chorvelle Johnson, chief executive officer (CEO) at Sagicor Bank Jamaica Limited, believes that her company’s decision to enter into the realm of horse racing sponsorship will be a very successful one.
Sagicor Bank Jamaica Limited on Thursday last announced its partnership with Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL), the sole promoter of horse racing in Jamaica, to stage the 92nd running of the Jamaica St Leger.
The Sagicor Jamaica St Leger is the final leg in the Triple Crown series and will be run at Caymanas Park this Saturday, July 28, 2018. The race is over 10 furlongs (2,000m) and carries a purse of $4 million, which is inclusive of $1 million from the new sponsor.
“It feels good. I mean, it feels very good especially due to the fact that we are partnering with an organistaion like SVREL, who are very innovative not only in Jamaica but looking to the Diaspora and coming out with new and different things.
“So Sagicor Bank and the Sagicor Group on a whole wants to be associated with winners, we want to be associated with innovators, and so that is why we felt good to put this partnership together and we know that it will be a very successful,” Johnson offered.
She continued: “Well, there are a lot of expectations, especially just having a good day from racing — that is the first thing. It would be good if Mr Lynch (Patrick) wins the St Leger because we [Sagicor] would be a part of history. So, I am hoping that will happen so we can say Sagicor Bank was a part of the history of horse racing on St Leger race day.
“But also that people recognise that we are here as a partner and that is important, because I am sure there are other things we’ll be doing together with SVREL in this regard,” the CEO said.
