Banking on Drone Strike

Banking on Drone Strike

The Sagicor Bank-sponsored Jamaica St Leger closes the curtains on another three-year-old Classic season, and although no horse is in line to win the vaunted Triple Crown all attention is going to be centred on trainer Patrick Lynch.

Lynch finds himself in the rather unique but satisfying position of having a chance of wining the Triple Crown as a trainer, and his main weapon is his Derby winner Drone Strike.

The likes of Marquesas, Fayrouz, Drummer Boy, My Beirut and Son Son, among others, are present to stymie the progress of Lynch and Drone Strike.

Below is an analysis of the 15 to start in the St Leger in post-position order.

DRUMMER BOY: (3.b.c – Natural Selection — Preach Preacher) Drummer Boy was a complete no-show in the Derby, finishing 53 lengths behind the winner in a race which not many have been able to comprehend, even with the passage of a month. Drummer Boy races tomorrow with the blinkers off and the tongue tie on. If one believes in fate, it is interesting to note that Drummer Boy won the 10-furlong Lotto Classic in May from gate number one, the same stall he starts from in the St Leger tomorrow.

AZARIA: (3.b.f — Performing Magic — Milestone) Cannot manage these.

DISABILITY CHARM: (3.b.f — Soul Warrior — Runnin On Empty) The winner of the 1000 Guineas is not given a chance here, even with the tongue tie on.

MARQUESAS: (3.b.c — Coded Warning — Islamorada) Was the only one that really performed as expected in the Derby, yet Marquesas was outstayed and out performed as, after taking up the running, he was easily passed by Drone Strike. Marquesas is better off going 10 furlongs instead of the Derby trip of 12 furlongs, and has every chance of recouping losses. Can win and is long overdue to score a victory.

ROYAL AVIATOR: (3.b.g — Casual Trick — Royal Victress) Did not do well in the Derby and the same is anticipated in the St Leger.

INNOVATOR: (b.gr.c — Casual Trick — Pretty Hilly)Graces the track but cannot manage these. Note — the visor is off.

UNCLE HONEY: (3.ch.c — Rising Moon — Silky Satin) Is in the race, and that’s about it.

COMMANDER TWO: (3.b.g — Forest Danger — Hurricane Michelle) Did not live up to expectations in the Derby and there are still doubts about his ability to effectively get 10 furlongs. Commander Two has speed and should prompt the pace without lasting too long.

AXLE ROD: (3.ch.c — Nuclear Wayne — No Money No Honey) Absent from the Derby and although progressing, is still not ready for his St Leger opponents.

TRICKSTER: (3.dkb.f — Casual Trick Face Tracker) Out of place.

CONTRACTOR: (3.ch.g — Blue Pepsi Lodge — Princess Terri) Was not a factor in the Derby and so shall it be in the St Leger.

FAYROUZ: (3-ch-f — Blue Pepsi Lodge — Princess Geeta) Has established herself as the top three-year-old filly. Did not deliver in the Derby although finishing third, 28 lengths adrift of Drone Strike and Marquesas. Fayrouz is going to earn again with the journey more in her favour, but she will not be troubling the ‘boys’ too much.

SON SON: (3.b.c — Taqarub — Jamaican Runner) Although well behind in the Derby, can be called the surprise package of the race. Son Son finished fourth then and since that race has been dealing with some niggling issues. Expected to bring home some more cash for his connections again.

DRONE STRIKE — (3.b.g — Sorrentino — Santa Baby) As a non-winner of two and winning the Derby at long odds of 24-1, Drone Strike exhibited the previously unknown qualities of supreme staying power and a strong determination to fight and win. If Drone Strike returns in the same mould as he did in the Derby, it is not going to be a race. Yet many pundits are willing to assess the 2018 Derby as an aberration, with the situation likely to return to the natural order tomorrow. Drone Strike is set to clear up matters on the morrow.

MY BEIRUT — (3.b.c Adore The Gold — Jadore) Way behind in the Derby but afterwards showed marked improvement when winning over 7 ½ furlongs at the non -winners of two level. My Beirut, while making progress, should again fall prey to the main players.
