Following Fayrouz’s lacklustre run in the recent Jamaica Derby over 12 furlongs (2,400m), trainer Anthony Nunes is expecting his filly to give a much better effort in the 92nd running of the $4 million Sagicor Bank Jamaica St Leger going 10 furlongs (2,000m) at Caymanas Park tomorrow.
Fayrouz, who was installed as the 2-1 favourite in the Derby, was never in the race — ending in third position — close to 28 lengths behind winner Drone Strike and second placed Marquesas.
“Disappointing, obviously. I mean, running third was alright but getting beaten by 28 lengths by the winner and second place was not what we had expected,” Nunes said.
Trainer Nunes believes that it was an off day for his charge and is hoping Fayrouz can overturn her Derby performance.
“We have no excuses, as she obviously didn’t run on the day and Drone Strike and Marquesas ran fantastic races and so if they run like that again and we run like we did in the Derby, then it won’t be a competitive race in the Jamaica St Leger.
“I choose to believe that the Derby run by Fayrouz was a one off and I don’t think that the St Leger will be like that as I expect a more competitive race,” Nunes stated.
He then revealed that his plan remains the same coming into tomorrow’s encounter as he expects his charge to run a capital race in the season’s final Classic race.
“She has been great. I am very happy with her. She trained well the other day and I am happy going into the St Leger. The plan remains the same and I expect her to run well again in the St Leger,” said Nunes.
