Patrick Lynch seeks Triple Crown as a trainer
Boom Jamaica Derby hero Drone Strike will be even fitter and better prepared going into tomorrow’s Jamaica St Leger, sponsored by Sagicor Bank Jamaica Limited. This, according to his trainer Patrick “Wacky” Lynch, who is on the cusp of creating history in local racing. The Sagicor Bank Jamaica St Leger, the fifth and final Classic for the season, will be run over 10 furlongs (2,000m) for a purse of $4 million.
Although no one horse can win the Triple Crown, Lynch has the opportunity to sweep the series as a trainer after saddling Disability Charm to victory in the 1000 Guineas and Drone Strike in the Derby. The Triple Crown races for three-year-olds consist of the 1000 or 2000 Guineas, the Derby and the St Leger.
“Winning two Classic races already is great and if I can get the third it would be wonderful, and so going into the St Leger it is with an amazing feeling that I can accomplish such a feat,” said Lynch.
Drone Strike rose above his native-bred three-year-old peers when he produced an upset run in the 12-furlong (2,400m) Blue Riband event on June 30.
He won by over two lengths ahead of Marquesas, who was 28 lengths in front of Fayrouz in third. The winning time was 2:35.2.
Although it was a powerful win, Lynch said that his charge Drone Strike is better now coming into his assignment for tomorrow.
“His [ Drone Strike] performance was great and wonderful in winning the Jamaica Derby which made me happy, and so I am glad for that.
“I think that he [ Drone Strike] is more comfortable going into the Jamaica St Leger at this time than when he was going for the Jamaica Derby.
“He had a lot of hiccups going into the Jamaica Derby but now everything is good, and I hope it stays like this. Well, when he is up to standard he will deliver, and I expect him to deliver as well,” Lynch indicated.
