UPDATE: Smoke from Riverton dump should clear up by midday — Chung
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Smoke emanating from the Riverton disposal site off Spanish Town Road has blanketed a section of Kingston but is expected to clear up by midday, says Chairman of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), Dennis Chung.
The NSWMA speculates that arsonists lit two fires at the dump in less than twelve hours yesterday.
“As of 6:15 this morning we got it about 80 to 90 per cent covered and we expect that by midday everything should be back to normal,” Chung informed the OBSERVER ONLINE a short while ago.
He said the authority has been working overtime in recent days to address illicit activities taking place at the refuse facilities in Kingston and other parishes.
