Mr Universe right choice for BGLC Trophy
Now back among Open Allowance company, Mr Universe should use his speed to run rivals into the ground in the $1.5-million Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) Trophy feature at Caymanas Park today.
Testing the deepness of the waters in Grade One Reggae Trophy over five furlongs (1,000m) straight on last, Mr Universe found Chace The Great, Siempre Bueno and Money Magnet too hot to handle when finishing in fourth position by over four lengths.
Stepping down in class and going five-and-a-half furlongs, the Wayne DaCosta trainee should have this race in the bag despite top weight of 57.0 kgs (126 lb) with Gary Richards in the saddle.
The last time Mr Universe was at this level, the four-year-old chestnut colt by Region Of Merit – Raging Fury was all of 11 lengths in front of Wong Don, who is present in this race, and Campesino, going six furlongs (1,200m) in a quick 1:11.1 minutes.
Also behind Mr Universe in that race were Another Bullet and Orpheus, both of whom are present here today in the field of nine runners. And so it will have to take something special from them to deny Mr Universe here.
Wong Don has the capability, but has been drawn on the inside at post position one and by the time he gets out Mr Universe will be long gone.
Another Bullet has been showing some versatility of late as he was just half length behind Campesino, Armageddon and Orpheus going five furlongs (1000m) straight. He is as tough as they come, but getting past Mr Universe here, is a difficult task.
Orpheus is getting his act together, and that close finish on last behind Campesino and Armageddon suggested that he is coming into his own now and should be competitive here.
The horse that Mr Universe should be worrying most about is former stable companion Armageddon. Poorly ridden on last, Armageddon just failed by a short head to catch Campesino, but he is more suitable to this distance and with a better handling from Odeen Edwards he should extend the favourite to the end.
Also on tap is the Emancipation Day Trophy going over the distance of six-and-a-half furlongs (1,300m). Top contenders are Talented Tony K, Little Big Horn, Smokey Topaz, Phineas, Balazo and Shining Light.
