CCTV cameras, sprinklers proposed for city markets
THE Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) is planning to use closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) to boost security at city markets, following Monday’s fire that destroyed the Ray Ray Market.
The corporation said the CCTV cameras would have real-time monitoring.
At the same time, the city council plans to utilise sprinklers at its markets to better mitigate against fires.
A timeline was not given as to when these equipment would be installed at markets in the city.
KSAMC Chief Executive Officer Robert Hill told the Jamaica Observer on Tuesday that 44 firefighters from Kingston and St Andrew and St Catherine responded to a call at 4:58 am that the Ray Ray Market was on fire.
The market has been plagued by fires over the years, the latest being November last year.
In addition to Ray Ray Market, the Redemption Arcade and the Papine Market were damaged by fire in June 2017 and 2018, respectively.
In the meantime, Deputy Mayor of Kingston Councillor Winston Ennis said yesterday, in a statement, that the corporation was working assiduously to repair the market.
“The KSAMC will be working to have the market restored as quickly as possible and has given the assurance that the council will continue to do its part to expedite the repairs of all markets affected by fire.
In addition, he said the KSAMC’s disaster coordinator, in collaboration with the city engineer, is conducting investigations to identify persons in need of general and emergency assistance relating to Monday’s fire.
The council has, meanwhile, appealed to those affected by the fire to allow the authorities to complete their investigations unimpeded.
