Arnett Gardens FC moved one step closer to the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF)/Lascelles Employees and Partners Co-operative Credit Union Women’s Premier League mid-season final after a 3-0 win over Olympic Gardens in their Zone B clash at Cling Cling Oval yesterday.

A brace from Shanel Spence (29th and 58th) and one from former national striker Rena Gordon (34th) was enough to hand the 2014 beaten finalist victory as they maintained their unbeaten run in the zone.

With nine points already in the bag the “Junglists” are in pole position for the mid-season final berth, as Olympic Gardens, who were suffering their first defeat of the season, remain in third position on four points.

Meanwhile, title favourites Waterhouse became the first mid-season finalist after their 3-2 win over St Ann Women’s in a heated Zone A affair at Drax Hall in St Ann.

It is understood that the game was affected on a number of occasions resulting in the referee being hit by a missile when angry fans launched an attack shortly after the final whistle.

The win pushed the Xavier Gilbert-coached team to an unassailable 12 points in the run for the first league final. St Ann Women remain in second position on four points.

At Cling Cling Oval, it was a fairly dull start to the encounter on a surface which was a dust nuisance that may have taken away from the quality of play.

But Arnett Gardens gained the ascendancy on the stroke of the half-hour mark when Spence fired home from a Shaday Shirley cross.

Spence should have doubled the lead in the 31st minute, but she dragged her effort into the side netting after a long pass from the back was headed on by Shanise Foster.

Three minutes later, Foster again came up with a critical assist, releasing Gordon through on goal and the latter made no mistake from close range to make it 2-0 at the break.

Arnett Gardens maintained the ascendancy on the resumption and went close to extending the lead, but Spence again failed to capitalise with a weak effort that was gobbled up by custodian Vanique Nicholas.

However, the slender striker redeemed herself soon after when Gordon played her through to slot past Nicholas in a one-on-one situation.

Olympic Gardens were not without hope as they tried desperately to get back into the game and actually had their best period of play in the latter stages of the contest.

Former national player Monique Pryce was at the forefront of the Olympic Gardens attack, but her best effort in the 75th minute was well parried by Telesha Campbell in goal for Arnett Gardens.

Winning coach Denton Shedden lauded his team for a good showing.

“This win was very important because it is an away game coupled with the fact that we didn’t get to train from the last game due to circumstances with our field, so I am very happy with the win and comfortable with my team going forward. As long as we put in the work then I don’t think we will have any problems getting to the mid-season (final),” Shedden said in a post-game interview.

His counterpart Michael Peart, who is working along side many-time winning captain Alicia James of Barbican, is expecting some improvements from his team going forward.

“From the last game we won I realised we fell flat at the ending of that game and I think that followed us into this game because we started slow and by the time we realised what was happening Arnett was on top of us.

“But we have about four players coming in so hopefully we will be stronger going forward and will give a better showing,” he reasoned.
