Finally, some ‘Sparkle
Super Sparkle, a dashing imported bay filly on twinkle toes, has given owner-trainer Ian Parsard high expectations of her becoming a more-than-decent racing prospect and an even more respectable breeding possibility in the future.
This following the filly’s bold and determined front-running victory over 1,700 metres to capture a three-year-old and upward, imported three-year-old and upward (NW3) lifetime, and native-bred three-year-old Restricted Stakes call at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Super Sparkle, a three-year-old by Storm Cat – She’s A Winner, was winning for the second time and consecutively from six starts following three previous second-place finishes.
A field of eight runners was declared, but Harry’s Train from the same camp as Super Sparkle was declared a late starter. Moving swiftly to assume the lead after the start, Super Sparkle was never headed and completed the race in a tidy 1:46.0 to upstage My Elle Belle with Anthony Thomas by 2 1/2 lengths, thereby taking the major share of the $930,000 purse. Azaria finished third. The recorded splits were 24.1 x 47.1 x 1:12.1 x 1:38.1.
After the race Parsard was asked what is in store for Super Sparkle, and his response was: “To be honest, looking ahead we have high hopes for her. She has been a little disappointing in the early part of her career, but my son Peter John (his assistant trainer) has really done a fair amount of work in finding out some of the issues with her, and I think he found out what the major issue is and now she is a winner. Following this, in discussions with the jockey for this race, they decided to make another change by removing the blinkers and she ran better. As a team they (Peter John and Dick Cardenas) are working really well together and he (Cardenas) is making quite a difference in the stable,” Parsard shared.
As to Super Sparkle’s breeding prospects, Parsard stated: “If I were to look down the line, I will say that she could be a good broodmare prospect for us as she is very well-bred and possesses all the ingredients for such a step. But she is now showing that she has ability and hopefully she will be able to kick on in racing for the time being.”
