O-Wrap: Cop murdered… 215 killed in crashes… PNP wants full USF probe

1. Policeman murdered in Westmoreland

The police are reporting that a police constable was murdered in a barbershop in Westmoreland last night after getting a haircut. He was reportedly shot multiple times by a lone gunman.

2. Court orders forfeiture of assets worth millions belonging to convicted drug lord

The Supreme Court has ordered that millions of dollars in assets and properties belonging to Jamaican drug lord Norris ‘Deedo’ Nembhard should be forfeited to the government.

3. PNP calls for full investigations of the Universal Service Fund

Opposition spokesperson of science and technology, Julian Robinson, said with clear evidence of corruption, nepotism, cronyism, systematic breaches and procedural lapses at the USF, he is reiterating his call on the leadership at the entity to be forthright in answering questions surrounding its operations.

4. 215 people killed in road fatalities

The Road Safety Unit (RSU) in the Ministry of Transport is reporting that as of today, 215 people have been killed from a total of 190 fatal crashes so far this year.

5. Pope on sex abuse: ‘We showed no care for the little ones’

Pope Francis issued a letter to Catholics around the world Monday condemning the crime of priestly sexual abuse and its cover-up. He demanded accountability but offered no indication of how he plans to sanction complicit bishops or end the Vatican’s long-standing culture of secrecy.

6. Tallawahs defeated by Trinbago Knight Riders

Trinbago Knight Riders pulled off a sensational four-wicket victory over Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League on Sunday night in Florida.

7. Medium term socio-economic policy framework to be completed by September

Work on the fourth Medium Term Socio-Economic Policy Framework (MTF) under the country’s long-term National Development Plan – Vision 2030 Jamaica – is scheduled for completion in September.

8. Europe sees sharp rise in measles: 41,000 cases, 37 deaths

The World Health Organization says the number of measles cases in Europe jumped sharply during the first six months of 2018 and at least 37 people have died.

9. Jamaica Stock Exchange exploring cryptocurrency trading

The Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Toronto-based Fintech Company Blockstation to explore the possibilities of offering cryptocurrency trading to investors.

10. Canada scraps family reunification lottery

Canada said Monday it is scrapping a family reunification lottery and going back to a first-come, first-serve immigration policy as it looks to double the number of parents and grandparents admitted to the country.
