Lucea clip Mt Pelier for Hanover Major League title
LUCEA, Hanover — Lucea FC won the Hanover Football Association Island Lux Beach Park /Negril and MP Ian Hayles Western Hanover/CDF Hanover FA Major League title on Sunday after beating Mt Pelier DC 1-0 in a contentious final at Watson Taylor Park in Lucea.
An own goal in the first half made the difference between the teams as Mt Pelier DC lost in a final for the second time this season after they previously lost in the mid-season final to Super Stars YC.
Lucea FC ended the game with nine players after Andre Hudson and Captain Chavion “Bush Rat” Anderson were both sent off during the 12 minutes of time that had to be added by referee Delroy Harding.
Several melees in the second half held up the game as tempers flared.
Additionally, Mt Pelier DC’s Shavoy Downie, who was substituted in the second half, was allowed to return to the field later after it was explained that his coming off had been a mistake and was described by one official as “an oversight”.
Lucea FC, who now qualify for the Western Confederation Super League in the 2018-19 season, avenged a loss to Mt Pelier DC in the second round, in which they also lost 0-1.
Mt Pelier DC got off to the better start and had two good scoring chances early, but Oliver Bright’s shot from just inside the six-yard box was parried by goalkeeper Tevin Campbell in the 18th minute.
Peter Green had another good chance a minute later when he got past two defenders, but hesitated with the shot and allowed a defender to get back and block his effort.
At the other end of the field, Mt Pelier DC goalkeeper Dennis Reynolds came off his line, just outside the 18-yard box, to stop Anderson, who had latched on to a ball that the Mt Pelier DC defence had failed to get away.
Campbell made another good stop in the 30th minute when he blocked a shot from close range from Bright. That defensive effort led directly to Lucea FC taking the lead.
Lucea FC then went down the field and a shot from the right side was deflected by a defender past hapless goalkeeper Reynolds, who could do nothing to stop the ball going over his head and into the goal.
Mt Pelier DC just missed going level three minutes into the second half when a bullet shot from the overlapping Mark Smith was just inches high of the Lucea FC goal.
Markino Smith had a chance for Mt Pelier DC in the 65th minute as he got into the Lucea FC defence, but his shot was just wide of the target.
Lucea FC thought they had a second goal in the 72nd minute after Reynolds was beaten by a corner, but the ball hit Dwayne Smith, who had just been subbed on to the field, and bounced kindly to the custodian who grabbed it just in time.
Smith had another chance to put the game out of reach of Mt Pelier DC, but his curling left-footer came back off the far top corner of the goal frame in the 77th minute.
