Lici’s Pepsi with a lot more fizz
Lici’s Pepsi’s , with a near-miss performance after returning from a 14-day respite, turned up on Saturday, September 22, 2018 to spank a decent field in a Restricted Stakes non-winners of two event for imported three-year-olds and upward and maidens and native-bred three-year-olds to show that she has benefitted from an earlier two months of rejuvenation.
“This is a good victory,” the filly’s trainer Patrick Fong offered after the victory and continued: “Since she has been retooled she has been looking much better in her gallops, and this victory today (Saturday) is even more encouraging as she looks to have something more in her to offer and with this prospect shining through, I am hoping for the best. For future prospects, I never really had any plans for her to compete in any race beyond this one. I just wanted to feel her out and see how she runs first. Now that she has shown me that she has something more to offer, it’s day by day and one race at a time, and we will see where this takes her.”
The promising juvenile Lici’s Pepsi, a dark bay filly by Blue Pepsi Lodge – First Choice, finished a creditable second behind Disability Charm in the fillies 1,000 Guineas and then returned to complete the frame in the Jamaica Oaks. The Jamaica Derby of 12 furlongs (2,400 metres) proved a distance too far for her to manage; however, following a two-month break from Classic duty and well refreshed, Lici’s Pepsi returned to competitive racing on September 8 to finish second to the American import My Elle Belle.
The Superkids Racing Stables filly then returned 14 days later on Saturday to turn back another good field and gave copious indications that she’s back to herself with a sprightly 1:19.2 for 1,300 metres, winning by 1 1/4 under Hakeem Pottinger from Anna Lisa with Oneil Scott up, chasing dictating splits of 23.2 x 47.1 x 1:12.0.
